Shola Ameobi wasn't able to take his place on the bench after tweaking his thigh in the warm-up and will now presumably be a doubt for what would be have been a likely starting spot in Athens on Thursday.

Romain Amalfitano appeared to replace Shola among the substitutes, prompting post-match internet speculation over the absence of Sylvain Marveaux.

Nothing concrete mentioned yet. I had heard earlier that he had some kind of groin injury.

I heard he was doing some DIY in his flat and got trapped under a pile of books after some shelving collapsed on top of him.

He's expected to be out for between three and five months.

We'll just have to wait and see. If he did spit his dummy out, then I find it really silly. He can't just expect to walk in the team with the players we have.

    Maybe he was just ill.

Yeah, but there's more to tactics then just playing your best players.

The only reason we'd ever bring on Obertan is because his pace can cause trouble for the opposition, that's it. Marv might be able to come on and produce great quality passes and produce quality in general, but he doesn't have pace, and if what we need is pace, then Obertan will get picked, despite Marv's quality.

It's like when Ben Arfa sometimes doesn't get picked. Despite the fact that he's easily the most technical player in the side, he can't defend for ****, and sometimes puts us in danger, and against a certain side, we really don't need that.

But I get what your saying, It would be frustrating for Marv, however, maybe he was just ill.

    Marvy is fairly quick...

And after the pre-season form he's shown compared to the others, really surprised he didn't start never-mind get on the bench. So I very much (weirdly) hope it was illness/injury, or for me that's a bad decision by Pardew. He needs to have done/injured something to warrant exclusion in my opinion.

Unfortunately for us, we can't possibly know, and in that vaccuum the morons using 140 characters to express their thoughts and feelings exist (and if anyone wants to follow my latest 140 words summation, I'm available at @Supermattreturn <whistle>), instantly making up stories to get re-tweets and their fifteen seconds of internet stardom... Very pathetic.

Anyway, zombies have taken over South Shields, tell everyone! <run>

From the starting line up yesterday, who would you drop to play Marveaux?

Don't let how the players played yesterday effect your decision.

The only logical swap I think anyone might make is Ba/Cisse removed to play Marv. But against Spurs, we'd need that striker power.

Jonas and Tiote would definitely be needed. Cabaye is a certain starter. That leaves Ben Arfa, and the only reason you'd drop him, is to find someone more defensively solid to counter Spurs wings, but Marv isn't exactly immense defensively either.

Marv is nippy, good agility, reactions and decent skill, but in terms of pace, he's not one of our fastest players.

We brung Obertan on for defensive reasons, to track back, keep up with their wings, and to take us up the pitch to waste time, and give us some relief.

The only reason you'd bring Marv on as a sub is If we needed extra creativity, to try and win a game, but we were just running the clock down.

Marveaux has been really good in the pre seasons games. Not good enough to displace any of the first team though. Bad crack if he's spat his dummy out.

Well if you go back to the predict the team thread we had before hand, I stated that having seen the lads in Pre-season Marvy looked quality and some of the other players were either pretty cack (Gosling) or seemed not match fit (Ben Arfa, Santon etc). So, going on that I said Tav could play left back (seeing as he started vs Hartlepool and was better than Santon who came on late and got outpaced by fat Hartlepool wazza).

Ergo I had Marvy playing right side of a 4-3-3, where he was curiously utilised versus Hartlepool... Mmmmmm...

Now, I was delighted Ben Arfa, Cabaye and Santon were fit enough to play in Pardew's eyes, so though being surprised on the aforementioned very reasonable and consistent basis, I though "fair enough". On learning Marvy hadn't been selected on the bench, even ahead of a player who's had no pre-season with us to establish himself, I thought that was shocking and if it's based solely on the games I've seen pre-season, it's a terrible decision. Fair enough?

Tash he wasn't in the squad never mind the first XI so it's not about dropping people from the starting XI it's the actual 18 man squad. The becnh yday was keeper? Willo, Raylor, Gosling, Ober, Amalfitano and Anita. He should be getting in that 18!
