Staying in Swansea for New Year's Eve with the mrs before the New Year's Day game Any recommendations where to eat out, drink etc?
If you're after a spot of grub on NYE, I can't recommend Mamma Mia's enough (it's in the middle of town by the big church, St. Mary's). Yummy Italian food and nice wines. If you fancy an Indian, the Vojon is a cracker on St. Helen's road. The Viceroy or Rose Indienne would also do you quite nicely and they're in the the same place. If you're staying in the middle of town (the premier inn, for example) Mamma Mia is just around the corner and you're in swansea's main drinking hub, Wind Street (pronounced like "wind up a watch"). If you're after a classy glass of wine, The No Sign Wine Bar (who also do a lovely Tapas menu) or La Prensa are great (although La Prensa is a bit pricey). If you're after a raucous NYE, you'll find it just about anywhere else on Wind Street. Before the game on NYD, there's a pub (Harvester or Brewer's Fayre) and a Frankie & Benny's outside the ground. If you're walking to the ground, I haven't always found the pubs on the way too friendly (and I drink in 'em) so I'd have a beer in town before you head to the ground or plan to get to the places at the ground early. Have a great trip, but leave Aguero on the physio's bench.
Well that's a 5 minute walk from both the places I said about eating. Mamma Mia is out of your hotel, walk down the pedestrianised bit until you see it on the left just after McDonalds. Just across the road from the Dragon is a Chinese called the Wild Swan. Great food. It's my 'go to' place for eat-in Chinese. (Yeah, eat out a lot!)
Just a word of warning , in front of the hotel observe the traffic / pedestrian lights , the traffic flows in all directions and for the unwary it's possible to get caught out .
Good point Bony. The Kingsway is a nightmare for those that don't know it. On the dual carriageway next to the hotel you'll have traffic coming from your left as you exit the doors but when you go to cross the next two lanes it's two way! Already been some nasty accidents there so be careful! I agree with what everyone else has said but if you're eating out you might want to book on Tinternet in advance or you won't get in. Also, many of the pubs charge an entrance fee on NYE. Some are ticketed in advance. I was shocked a few years ago to find that even the Queens was all ticket.
Great pub and one of the very few "old" school pubs left in the city. Had one in there last night ,rammed full .
There's a great Indonesian restaurant on St. Helen's road called Garruda....as Shaper said, you come out of your hotel turn right and keep walking to get to St. Helen's road. Also, there's a French place called 'Didier & Stephanie's that does posh grub for reasonable prices on the same street. Both of those places are small so you will probably need to book. An interesting experience is the restaurant at the top of the Meridian tower (I think it's called the Grape and Olive) Spanish grub, good (nothing special) but spectacular views of the city...I imagine a visitor might get more out of the views than the locals, memorable experience of Swansea. If you've got a car or don't mind shelling out for a 25minute taxi ride each way, the 'King Arthur' (Reynoldston, on the Gower peninsula) is worth visiting for an afternoon. Proper traditional pub in the countryside. If you like Chinese I'd also recommend the Wild Swan. Have a great time!
Swansea is full of good eateries, Just go to the swansea out and about website, you will be spoiled for choice... http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurants-g186466-Swansea_Swansea_County_Southern_Wales_Wales.html
If your at a loose end on Matchday Paul, there's a New Years Day dip at 12 o clock on Swansea Beach (opposite St Helens Rugby Ground). Frozen bollocks guaranteed
Only eaten there once, had a lovely meal there. There's a tidy pub net door, The Cross Keys and your only 50 metres from Wind Street.
A 30 minute drive up the valleys and you will find the Abercrave Inn and the Pen-Y-Cae. Spectacular food, some say the Michelin star restaurants in London do the best food... Bollocks! These two pubs-come-restruants smash all the £400 a dish places I tried (only a few mind you, I ain't rich!!!). Both pubs do award winning food, costs just 10% of what the Toff Capital places charge. Not sure if there is a rivalry as they seem keep pushing each other to do better things and be the best in the region.
Been there for food Project but can't remember which one it was - it was a few years back. Superb meal as I recall. Had a nice meal at the Chelsea Cafe recently (think that's what it's called) in Salubrious passage. Just around the corner from Mamma Mia. Had a good night out in Jack Murphy's on Wind Street last night too. Only been in there once before. Lots of dancing was done - and far too much alcohol.
Would normally agree but yesterday my friend and her toddler had chicken for lunch there yesterday and both were violently sick all night. Might be coincidence but you run that risk if you have chicken in any restaurant.
