At the beginning of the MacAnthony era I was a little sceptical, just another timeshare salesman with a lot to say for himself was my initial impression. With the signings of Boyd, CMS, Mclean by the then Manager Keith Alexander, who was then replaced by Darren Ferguson, the addition of players such as Charlie Lee, Chris Whelpdale, Dean Keates, Chris Westwood amongst others we had teams who may not have been as skillful as the current crop (Boyd apart) but they were battlers, fighters, chasers of lost causes and refused to lay down, always trying to outscore the opposition. It was tense, nerve-wracking at times but always exciting and entertaining. The 8 -2 against Accrington on a wet and windy Tuesday evening, 7 - 0 against 10 man Brentford after the dismissal of their keeper in the first few minutes. Getting battered by Leeds and Leicester away but gaining revenge at London Road - Heady days indeed. Now? Dull as dishwater football, little effort, little creativity, no desire to battle and fight - the only League game I watched this season that is truly memorable was the 9 men beating MK, that was about the only time the desire to battle and win was on show. I can take losing matches as part and parcel of the game, especially against better opposition, what I cannot accept is the abject surrender against mediocre teams. 'The most expensive squad' 'The best squad ever' A couple of the Managerial quotes this season. Those comments may well be true, but the performances on show give lie to the quality or desire of many of the players. 'We will walk this League with the players we have' 'We will be promoted as Champions' A couple of comments from over-confident Posh fans pre-season (the latter the aim of the Chairman). Not such an easy league now is it? I no longer enjoy watching Posh and I am also giving serious consideration to stopping going to London Road on match days, if the players can't be bothered, why should I? I get to see some good football and good performances watching our youth team in action - Perhaps their more senior colleagues should follow the youngsters example?
Certainly not going well Pete. Must be problems in the dressing room if the willingness to battle for each other isnt there.
Don't know if you have seen this opp and Simples.
I don't know what has gone wrong but Posh certainly aren't the pleasure to watch that they have been in previous seasons As you say it's fine to lose to better teams if the lads have given their all .... but half-hearted performances are just depressing
Ferguson is looking to off-load Zakuani, Barnett, Mendez-Lang and Ferdinand during the transfer window. I see Stevenage are strapped for cash and willing to sell Luke Freeman, I wonder if he is back on our shopping list or will he prefer to go straight to a Championship club?
I given up going now not paying good money to watch that rubbish no heart in the team Not been in over a month best thing I done don't even listen on the radio
Strangely enough, I was having a discussion with my mate on route to the Gills game today which turned out cancelled and lost me my travel costs...about how when i was a kid watching the Gills it was in the blood, true loyalty at all costs...I could never ever say i wouldn't watch my team because they were so bad. Different if we are talking from a financial, family or work commitment point of view, however, i'm not seeing those words. Just to say I'm not watching that rubbish is sad. It's when your team needs you the most! I've watched the Posh play this season against us and you have a decent team...and your not fighting off relegation. So it just needs supporters with more faith or has the modern game really rotted through to the core and the only expectation now is glory.
don't see what that's got to do with it from a supporters prospective...you either support your team or you don't. If people want glory go support Man Utd...oh second thoughts...not this season...lol
Was just thinking that the wealth of some clubs may come into it as well for some people, which might lead them to glory hunt from the safety of their armchair.
you said that not me...lol...although i might have been thinking it but tell no one shhh still Gills on telly Friday...now what shall i do...attend or watch on tv?
I didn't mean it like that. Take Norwich. When we were in div 1, we still had good support, because we were the only league team to watch. How many league teams are their around lower league teams that could tempt fans away. Sadly I know people that stopped supporting Norwich and decided to support Man Utd, when we went through some very hard times. They only ever see their 'team' play now from the safety od their armchair or over the last 3 years when we have played them at Carrow rd. Why not be a 'plastic' with Fulham, WBA, Southampton etc, or is it the wealth of a club that can sometimes have the appeal?
