I'm beginning to think it's not all down to the players but more to do with the defensive coaching-or lack of. If we suddenly signed the Barca back four of Alves,Piquet,Puyol & Abidal I've a feeling we'd still concede sloppy goals!
Maybe the way forward is,instead of signing another defender, employ a defensive coach who knows what he's doing.

The defence will improve once we get the Midfield closing down faster, but we do need another body.

If we don't recruit we will need to move the team around.
Bring back Connelly or Bromby at right back, play Lees & O'Dea together at the back, leaving Taylor/White to continue at left back.

Kisnorbo and O'Brien have both looked short of full fitness so far this season, hopefully they can comeback stronger after a spell in the reserves together.

There is something lacking in training - a better defensive coach and some sort of routine to train the players to not switch off after scoring a goal or conceding. If I were in charge I'd have hired a sports psychologist and have at least one hour long session a week for all the players. 1 on 1 if necessary.

Anyone else seen Matteo's desparate job plea in the YEP to become the new defensive coach? <laugh>

If we're going to get someone in, let it be an experienced, knowledgeable outsider. I can't stand this fascination with it being ex-players who have to come in and sort out all our problems.

I sincerely hope Grayson reads that. It may never have occured to him, for whatever reason. I hope he reads it and takes it on board.

Palace have an ex-player as their defensive coach, former Aussie international Popovic. Think he's been doing a good job till last saturday when their defence looked poor at picking up our strikers & basic marking. Just goes to show if the players don't listen ,don't concentrate & just switch off no amount of coaching will do any good. Maybe they just had an off day,but in the long run it can only be beneficial to have expert defensive coaching. It helps to have defenders who actually listen & have the intelligence to take what's taught them on board though.

Even though it was obviously a plea, he is right. We should get a defensive coach in, clearly SG and his current staff don't know the solution. It's strange though that our defensive problems still exist, with Grayson being a decent defender himself...
