Football League Division Two 1999/2000 Preston won the division title after 19 years away from the top two divisions, showing great progress under promising young manager David Moyes. Burnley, who were unfancied and even tipped for relegation by some owing to two unimpressive previous seasons, achieved promotion in the second automatic spot. After losing in the previous year's play-off final, Gillingham won promotion via the Division Two playoffs to reach the upper half of the English league for the first time in their history, their opponents in the play-off final being a Wigan Athletic side playing their first season in the impressive new 25,000-seat JJB Stadium. Chesterfield started the season well enough, but a dreadful run of 2 wins in 20 games mid-season consigned them to relegation. S****horpe, who had won promotion via the play-offs the previous year, never achieved enough wins to have a serious chance of survival, and went straight back down. Blackpool had been coping well in previous seasons despite financial problems, but they finally took their toll this season and helped send the club down. Cardiff were the final relegated team, eventually proving the weakest of a group of sides that could have easily gone down in the last weeks of the season. The highlight of their season was their game against Cambridge United, where they drew despite being a player down after 45 minutes, two players down after 63 minutes and 3 players down after 75 minutes.[1] Pos Team P W D L F A Pts 1 Preston North End 46 28 11 7 74 37 91 2 Burnley 46 25 13 8 69 47 88 3 Gillingham 46 25 10 11 79 48 85 4 Wigan Athletic 46 22 17 7 72 38 83 5 Millwall 46 23 13 10 76 50 82 6 Stoke City 46 23 13 10 68 42 82 7 Bristol Rovers 46 23 11 12 69 45 80 8 Notts County 46 18 11 17 61 55 65 9 Bristol City 46 15 19 12 59 57 64 10 Reading 46 16 14 16 57 63 62 11 Wrexham 46 17 11 18 52 61 62 12 Wycombe Wanderers 46 16 13 17 56 53 61 13 Luton Town 46 17 10 19 61 65 61 14 Oldham Athletic 46 16 12 18 50 55 60 15 Bury 46 13 18 15 61 64 57 16 A.F.C. Halcyon days eh Masky? If we are unfortunate to go down this season, it will be the second time I've experienced our exit from the top flight. Yes, I'm that old!
Any of you pick yourselves out in the crowd on this day back a few years earlier? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5A5CNx9M2s
my first game I watched us, we got relegated think it twas about 82-83 ish.............the only thing that caught my eye and has remained my love ever since that was the bob bank........I was standing bottom left terrace of the grandstand family section im assuming at the time, the sight and sound coming from the bob bank was chilling, from that day forward it became my second home.........until they knocked the old lady down of course, so I`m like a hobo know with nowhere else 2 go.
It was 81/2 we got relegated by losing to Luton Town at home in last game. City got promoted in 82/83 season - the Len Ashurst season with Hemmerman and the Bennett brothers.
Cardiff are the most promoted and relegated club in the FA pyramid. I think our last stay in the championship was the longest period in one division.
cheers ninian im never the best at dates tbh......I was part of the youth team around the time 2....alan Durban the manager I think>>>if im honest my local village coach was better than what Cardiff had at the time <no ****ting ew either>.....me and my mate both 10or11 at the time were better than the first team squad who used 2 train on the next pitch (sophia gardens I tink). we both jumped **** after two seasons and I headed 2 Newport county and my butty going up 2 leeds............neither of us made the finish line lol.......i fell into the beer trap and ended up pissed instead of training, good at the time like lol....**** when you sober up later .>>>>
I think Graham Williams was the manager in 1981/82 but got sacked for Len Ashurst who couldn't keep us up.
You should of gone down in 2005 when you fiddled about money to get players you couldn't afford to stay up on goal difference.
Fair play Considering the 80's and 90's not a bad record. Hopefully a blip but I fear the greed in the modern game leaves only a very few select safe from possible ruin Tis a slippery slope. The game is corrupt but we will always be fans of our own team (apart from the plastics who can....)
