We lose to coventry one week then beat the league leaders who have been unbeatan through 2011 until today?

why do we go on good runs then poor runs, which seem to be always happening..

we had " one of those days " at coventry if the pen had been given in the first min then the result would have been very different. i said to my 12 year old son with half an hour left we could play all night and not score. We played well at coventry 19 shots on target says enough ronight we got our and Dereks just rewards!

Despite the result last week, it has to be remembered that we had 19 shots ON TARGET against Coventry last week. By all accounts it wasn't a great performance but you would normally expect 1 or 2 to go in from that number.

I suspect that DM may have had various posts from here and elsewhere stuck up on the dressing room wall this week...!

I thought you guys were very good tonight, organised and pressed well. Perhaps you just lack a little support for Maynard?

Was at both games between our teams and if you play like that every week you will be fine. Thought your back 5 were physically brave last night. In answer to your question, obviously looks like some sort of consistency issue, glad we don't have to play you again for a while LOL

Thanks to all of the Saints fans who are taking these 2 unexpected defeats so graciously in our bid to survive.

Happy New Year to you all

Like a lot of other teams we are made up of players who really think by showing up and putting in a good shift now and then is acceptable. It is NOT!

If you are earning their kind of money it should be expected that you play your best every game. They do NOT!

    Sad isn't it lanlodger??????

Another saints fan here - went to the game last night and just wanted to say well done, and well played. I thought city were impressive. Passed the ball well, very fit and organised. Your manager clearly knows what he's doing. Surprised you are not further up the table. Good luck for the rest of the season.

I have just been on the Southampton board reading their views.

A lot of them were saying what standingfootonly just said. Interesting as well a few commented on saying that Maynard was onside.

Back to the original question, we changed tactics for last nights game and it worked. Del is still trying to find his formation and he also has players in mind. We could find a few changes coming up in January and I think some off them could be shocks. He has played with the best players he has at the moment not necessarily the ones he wants!

I cannot for the life of me understand how you guys are in relegation trouble. I wasn't at the away game, so I can't comment on that one, but yesterday you were very good. A toss up between you, Hull, Forest and Blackpool for the best side to visit SMS this season (ie better than the likes of West Ham, Leeds, Boro, Palace, Birmingham & Brighton).

I didn't think you outplayed us, but a win for you certainly wasn't undeserved. Adomah and Carey (? - your no.6) were very, very good, whilst your two CMs very just unbelievably strong and had hold of the game right from the 1st whistle.

I agree that the manager is still trying to find the best combination. 11 goals conceeded in the 12 games since Derek took over is easily mid-table performance if not better.

It remains the fact that we are not scoring enough at the other end, either from midfield, or the strikers.

Changes to come in those departments next month...

hopefully yeah, with maynard going i expect to see 2 strikers coming in, sandaza seems to be the obvious replacement and gem from a lower league team, also a CAM would be another good buy, perhaps Stevenson or driver from hearts, then we'll need a new CB and a RB and i think we might just be alright

have to ship a few out though

Confidence, of course, is everything. A look at the statistics would suggest that we lack it at home. Also that we haven't found a way of using Maynard to full effect - not that this matters for much longer. Pitman et al are different kinds of strikers and McInnes will have to find a way of using them to full effect.

As has been the case for a long time, our midfield can't seem to function as a supplier or scorer of goals on a regular basis. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Stevenson arrive soon - and he's highly rated in Scotland.

We're still in a dogfight but the signs are good, and have been so since McInnes got his feet under the table.

A happy new year to all.
