Would make sense in some ways. O'Shea and Brown are both potentially going to leave so it could be 2 in, 2 out. Also, Fergie has seemed wary of being understocked at the back since the debacle with injuries a couple of seasons ago. It's also no co-incedence imo that Jones and Varane are both versatile and could fulfil a number of differnet roles in the team when called upon.

I hear Johns and Varane can both play in midfield so maybe that's something to with it. I'd rather have someone whose natural position is central midfield though.

Yeah I'd be very disappointed if we didn't go for an out and out CM during the window, though the focus does seem to be on wingers and defenders right now. I don't see Fergie playing the 2 defenders (should we sign Varane) in CM regularly but it's a useful option to have when it comes to the inevitable reshuffling of the pack, injuries etc.

Evans and Brown are almost definitely on their way out, possibly along with O'Shea. With Rio being more injury prone in recent seasons, we may end up with only Vidic, Smalling and Jones as fit CBs next year. Always better to have four than three. Also, young CBs don't always develop the way you expect or hope (see John Curtis and Michael Duberry).

So buying Varane reduces the risk of having two young CBs, and will also make us less likely to be exposed in the future if Smalling or Jones' development stalls.

I think he'd be a good buy. He can clearly play as defensive meidfeilder, which we need and will be the versatile replacement for JOS should he leave.
He's also cheap(ish) and so would free up money for the much needed creative CM.

Can't be a bad thing in my opinion.

Its said that we will loan him(Varane) to PSG for a season as he wants regular Football for now. With talk of the Qatari`s funding our signing spree it would be no surprise to see him head to Paris since Qatar Holdings bought 70% of PSG a few months back.
