Over the next few weeks I will be writing posts about former Saints FC players and where they are now. I thought I would start with Paul Telfer. After he left Saints as you know he followed Gordan Strachan to Celtic and enjoyed a few successful years in Scotland playing European football. He then retired in 2007 at the age of 36 to spend time with his family back in the south, Winchester to be precise. He came out of retirement twice. Firstly, in the summer of 2007 playing for Bournemouth on a one year contract, he later cancelled his contract, of his own accord, to help with their financial problems. He then signed for Leeds in August 2008 on a non-contract basis and was meant to act as cover for current Saint Frazer Richardson. He gradually found himself being played at CB and being done b oace time and time again so soon faded out of the team. In April 2009, Telfer signed for non-league Slough Town, but failed to appear in the 2009–10 season. In the 2011 close-season, it was announced that Telfer would be joining Sutton United in a player/coach capacity. I was interested to see that he was playing for Sutton United in the FA Cup on Sunday and that is what made me want to find out about former players. He is now their player/coach. That was the first of many parts and there will be another one very soon. Enjoy! COYR!
Didn't have the reputation of being the fittest player in the Saints squad, or something. At 40, he's obviously looked after himself.
I watched the Sutton/Notts County game on ESPN. I was wondering whether the Telfer bossing the midfield was any relation. Quite amazed to see it was the same Paul Telfer. I thought he was the best player on the pitch, and when he had to drop back to left back to cover an injury, Sutton were half the team they had been.
One of the most down to earth and modest guys in the game. He used to drive a Peugeot 206 to the training ground when others had their Ferraris, Mercs and BMWs. When asked why he had such an ordinary car, he responded by saying he was a footballer not a racing driver and a flash, fast car was unnecessary!
Got told a story earlier this week about Paul Telfer from a mate who knows his wife......he still lives local close to Paul Doswell (ex eastleigh manager) who is now manager of Sutton. Apparently Doswell badgered him to sign for Sutton for over an hour while Telfer was walking his dog, in the end Telfer said he would sign on condition he allowed him to coach as well...deal done. Met Paul Telfer at a golfing event earlier this year at Basingstoke GC, really nice guy, plays off a handicap of 1 which is bloody brilliant.
