Just wanna be serious for a moment. We're all footballing fans, and we all share a common bond in football, no matter who we support. I'm sure all of us, rivals or not, can't stand the rapid commercialisation of football. Nothing is sacred any more. Whilst we all respect the passion and history of every club, it seems like the businessmen at the top do not. As we all know, St James' Park is now being formally renamed to the Sports Direct Arena. However, as our rivals, I'm wondering what you guys are going to do. Will you fall in line and start calling it the Sports Direct Arena, or will you respect the heritage of our club (even if you don't like it) and keep calling it St James' Park, thus preserving the name and resisting commercialisation like this? The third option, of course, is that you'll call it the Sports Direct Arena just to try and wind us mags up, which is fair enough. Views appreciated.
One fatal error, you may talk a lot about us but we dont about you, I wont be calling it anything but thanks for thinking we care
I thought I might hear tripe like this unfortunately. Many Sunderland fans will mention the name because we're rivals, and in case you haven't noticed, we have derby games against each other twice a year. Supporters of both clubs also have signatures which are riddled with things about the rival club (including you) so there's clearly more of a 'connection' than most, if you could call it that. When supporters of other teams talk about coming to SJP for their game, I'd hope that they'd keep calling it St James' Park. However, I'm just wondering what our rivals intend to do. Does the respect of heritage and history go beyond footballing rivalry, or will you all enjoy calling it the Sports Direct Arena and rubbing our faces in it?
i made an honest vote and then you get a twat like munster on your board no wonder we don't communicate and yes i did vote Sports Direct to wind you up lol but it was always Sid James Park anyway Exeter have the real St James Park
Will use ARENA for mags who irritate me but I still say we play at Roker all the time and Middlesbrough play at Ayresome park so not much of me using any other moniker
It will always be Sid James Park to me and after this Carry On Again, its little wonder. Also, me wind any mags up? The very thought.
What on earth is this stupid poll all about? Why would anybody call your stadium anything other than its true name? Why would anybody call Bolton's home Burnden Park when the name of the stadium is the Reebok Stadium? Why would anybody call Stoke's home Victoria Ground when the name of the stadium is the Britannia Stadium? Why would anybody call Coventry's home Victoria Ground when the name of the stadium is the Ricoh Arena? Why would anybody call Leicester City's home Filbert Street when the name of the stadium is the King Power Stadium?
And so say all of us Na! Na! Na! Na! Na! I can almost smell the bile erutping inside you chum. Sports Direct Stadium. Its ****ing funnier and funnier as the day wears on this.
Why would anybody call you Clockstand_Pie_Dodger when you are actually a massive helmet? Stop being an idiot. You know exactly what this thread is about.
****ing hell. Pot calling the kettle or what? One thing is for certain Chapped-arse, our stadium name wouldnt get into your stadium name for sure. Lol
Btw, for anyone who doesn't 'get it', I think this sums it up well: http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/100167-Newcastle-rename-St.-James-Park.. I was just wondering if fans of our biggest rival club would think along the same path.
Aye & ours will be overpriced & not worth that amount of money whilst there's would be a very good value for money free transfer. LOL.
Tsk Tsk Tsk... Resorting to personal abuse ey chappaz... All I ask is why your club should be addressed by anything other than its correct designation? Perhaps you may now answer the question as to why your clubs name requires special treatment as opposed to any other club now that you have thrown your little tantrum?
Chappaz, I have a long-standing personal loathing for your club. But, that said, I can never forget the three F.A. Cup wins in '51, '52, and '55. And especially the three players who played in all three finals - Jackie Milburn, Bobby Mitchell, and Bobby Cowell. We both had fine teams in those days, but when it came to the Cup, nobody knew how to do it better than Newcastle. It'll always be St. James' Park to me, bonny lad.
Steve Harmison spits his dummy out too! http://www.sportinglife.com/footbal...r/11/11/10/SOCCER_Newcastle_Lead.html&BID=165 Changing the name of Newcastle's St James' Park ground is an "insult" and akin to changing the club's colours to red and white, according to famous fan Steve Harmison. United announced the 119-year-old venue is to now be called the Sports Direct Arena - named after owner Mike Ashley's retail company - until a permanent sponsor can be found. The club claim the move is necessary as it will allow them to generate extra income, but former England cricketer Harmison believes it carries the same sentiment as adopting the colours of arch-rivals Sunderland. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said: "I can only liken it to changing the team's colours from black and white to red and white and making us look like Sunderland. "That's how big a deal it is. You do wonder whether they would do that if the money was right. "St James' Park means everything to me, it is a magical place. It is a special place for every single Newcastle United fan. Players come and go, managers come and go but Newcastle United and St James' Park stay the same." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know, some of their own fans have such short memories... It would appear asthough Steve doesn't recall the clubs true heritage to well at all! please log in to view this image
I've explained it in the thread. There is heritage and history, and St James' Park has buckets of it. Commercial fat cats can choose to write a different name on a bit of paper, or put a different name up on the wall, but it's ultimately up to every individual what they want to call the stadium. It's been St James' Park for over 100 years, so whether you choose to call it by its new name and resist this awful commercialisation infecting football, or continue calling it the name which it has become synonymous with Newcastle football for over a century, perhaps shows how much of a true football fan you really are. We don't have to like each others clubs, but we should still respect each others clubs. Note that I wouldn't put the people in the same bracket who choose to call it the Sports Direct Arena just to wind is up, as long as, rivalries aside, they would also admit it's wrong and ultimately not wish it upon anyone. I don't mind a bit of banter. Well said
