Being only 23 years old, i never watched Liverpool in the 90s. When you watch programs like Premier League Years we're never really mentioned and tbh don't seem like we do very well.

Was there a understanding that the team was in transition or is it similar to what it's like now where we don't understand why we aren't competing?

Cant speak for others but it always felt like we had the makings of good team just never happened for various reasons like best attack in fowler and Owen in league but also prob worst defence to counter it.

We never had all the boxes ticked like utd and arsenal seem to, from squad to manager etc they had better even though at various points we prob
had best defence when hyypia was in it to best midfield to best attack, never more than 1 of them though and was too weak in the other areas.

Watch 'This is England 90' - It was pretty much like that.

XTC and Weed. Acid house parties in fields.

Football was good, John Barnes etc. dancing up the wing.

Football in general was a lot more fun back then and not just because my team was winning stuff. There wasn't the 24 hour media coverage picking apart the game, the influx of foreigners to the league was considered exciting, the England national team (pre and post Taylor) played interesting football and had some proper talent and characters in the team, building a team wasn't just about money, teams played with wingers and two strikers (hence being ****e in Europe!) etc etc etc!

Good assessment. Makes me wish it was the 90's again tbh.

I actually wish time stopped still and we were still in the 90's. Awesome decade for so many reasons. Loved it.

Just talking to you usually does the trick.

I'm not using it as an excuse, but I felt at the time that the terrible events of the 80's knocked a lot of the spirit out of the club- football just never seemed as important again.
Then the PL started. Our owners were a bit behind the times and we weren't as sharp at the commercial opportunities as we should have been and just got left further behind. Man Utd seized the opportunities brought about by the combination of their rising star and big name and went on to be even bigger.
During the middle of the decade we got ourselves back up to a consistent top 4 position but could never quite push on.
Like people have said above, we had some great players, but never managed to hit the magic combination.

Football was still 'real' in the 90's. Sky's influence was largely positive in the early days, and KO times aside it was all gravy.

The Taylor report meant that facilities started improving dramatically, but going to the game wasn't the often sterile experience it is these days.

The game was still owned by the working class and away days in particular were always great fun. A car full of lads stopping off at an off licence at 10.30, stocking up with Mad Dog for the journey <laugh> Good times.

Italian football started being shown on Channel 4 and we all marvelled at how technically brilliant the top teams were. The fact that it was sterile 1-0 ****e was initially overlooked!

Not by me it wasn't, I ****ing hated it. Turgid borefests every Sunday lunchtime.

I think it becoming widely viewed, helped people realise that our football was way more exciting, what we lacked in technique, we more than made up for in terms of excitement and action.

The Sky dosh slowly but surely allowed us to bring in quality European players and they bridged the gap in terms of quality, but we still retained our footballs identity. I think we've now largely lost it in recent years tbh.
