Should he choose to stay (or if he has no choice, which is looking like the reality of the situation) should RvP remain the captain or should it go to someone else?
Good lord no. He burned that bridge when he made his public announcement. I'd have no gripes with him staying, quite the opposite I'd love him to, but I think it'd set a bad example. Personally I'd like to see Vermaelen captain. I love Arteta and the professional way he goes about his business but I worry he's too quiet.
I think Vermaelen or Szczesny are future captains. But unless RVP signs a new contract, then I can't see how he can remain captain.
Arteta is not quiet, he knows perfectry well when to press a ref. He has a cool head. Just ask Everton fans.
If RVP signs a new contract, then let him keep it because by all accounts he was a very good captain on and off the pitch last season. If he does not, then give it to Vermaelen.
I would prefer Vermaelen anyway. He's a very vocal player, seems fully commited and we may get the best out of him with the added responsibility.
I personally don't think Wilshere is mature enough for even the vice armband. Maybe in a few years. Although maybe it would help him mature into the role as he is definitely a future captain. Guess I'm undecided Verm would be a good choice as captain though.
The moment RVP made his announcement he disrespected his position as club captain, AW should have immediately stripped him of the role and announced this publically. It's unlikely RVP will make a complete U-turn but even if he did his actions are not what you would expect in your leader, TV is the man IMO
Ignoring his statement, he was an excellent captain last season. A real leader on and off the pitch, as SJW19 has rightly said. If he extends his contract, I wouldn't have anything against him being captain. If he doesn't, it's simple. I wouldn't want someone as captain who would rather be somewhere else and Thomas Vermaelen would be my choice. He has already stated enough times how grateful he is to Arsenal Football Club for sticking by him during his injury-hit time at the club. Something which I haven't seen from van Persie yet.
Bumped, due to relevancy now. Verm has worn the armband all summer, surely he should lead us forward. Until he goes to Barca. Does he have barca DNA? If Song has Barca DNA, then everyone must have it.
