The recent events as Coventry City Football Club http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21912436 Where there are two companies with exceedingly similar names, Coventry City Football Club (Holdings) Ltd, who claim to own all the assets of the club, including the players, the management and all the staff. There is also the company that has put into administration on called Coventry City Football Club Ltd, which they claim has no assets of its own. If CCFC leave the Ricoh Arena and play somewhere else are they the club, or if someone sets up an alternative team that could play at the stadium - are they the club? I know that there will be a registered club with the Football League, more than likely called ccfc holdings Ltd. But it made me think about what makes a club.
Why does any business, football or not, do these things.......money! Think bankers, comedians, multinationals, the list goes on...... We are small fish who know what the sharks are doing....only some of them don't do it very well. Hey ho, bring on another cold Saturday on the terraces enjoying footy.....bu***er the lot of them.
Crazy how they can get away with doing that. As for the club, well I suppose it's hard to define. The history, culture, colours and fellow supporters are probably the key long-term aspects of it which will never change - for example, Manchester United will always be associated with Red shirts, record numbers of league titles, just being generally successful, Ferguson etc. In the short-term, there are things like the coaching staff, the board, the players and - god forbid - the badge, which will change pretty regularly through time and rarely be synonymous with the club unless you have a club legend presently in the ranks at the club - something we are lucky enough to have with us currently.
But if Coventry club start playing else where with their current players, and another team started up at the ricoh location but in a lower league then who would be the club to support? It's a bit similar to MKD and Wimbledon I suppose.
