After shedding out over £60 on 2 tickets for 90 minutes of football, it got us talking about what else that means. What is everyone elses match day experience? Do you turn up just before 3 and then leave? Do you go for a pint at about 1am and make a great occasion of it? Get to the stadium around half 2 and watch the warm up? Im just really interested to hear what people include as their match-day experience. Personally, for the football we tend to turn up around 40 minutes before kick off, sometimes have a pint and go to our seats around 20 minutes before kick off. For the evening games, often go for a meal out as im not often home from uni so finance isnt too much of an issue for the 2 of us. Whereas for the rugby, we go plenty in advance, enjoy a few pints before and often one after and make more of an occasion of it. Not sure why we dont for the football, possibly due to the fact you cant drink in the stands. What does everyone else do when they go to the football for their match-day experience??
The lager is s h i t e.... I turn up 5 - 10 mins before kick off, spend an hour in the pubs around the stadium before the match....then drink in the city after the game.......there is nothing to keep me there after the game.........unlike at say cov, where you can go in the casino after the match..........see some women, gamble, and go on the lash as long as you like............thats great for me ,as a born again christian..
was just interested to hear whether people see their ticket as entrance for a game or a day out really.
I get there about half 2. Read the programme, watch the lads warm up and then go home at full time Nothing special
Its not too bad when you only buy your own ticket, but 2 really add up. I couldnt believe it when it came to over £60, im determined to make more of an occasion of it from now on!!
Tell me about it. I have to pay for me and my brother. I could afford to go to alot of away games if i only had to pay for me. But paying for 2 people is expensive
Im a student at reading and went to their game at blackpool on saturday. That was £22 for my ticket. Expensive, but not too bad. But get 2 and its £44- hell of a lot for such little time. We made it into a days occasion with pubs before hand in the glsitening sun and nandos afterwards. Costs a little more, but feels like a days activity rather thna just 90 minutes of football
Acquire a four-pack of whatever lager's cheap in my local off-licence or alcohol-vending store. Get on the train from the North East to Leeds. Talk to other Leeds fans en route if there are any, or just listen to a podcast/some music. Meet a mate in town if they're going and have a couple of pints. Head to Elland Road. Go to the protest if there's one on. Pick up the Square Ball (independent fanzine), if it's on sale. Head to the stadium - normally inside by 14:45. Watch tedious goal compilations with overly-loud music and listen to irritating matchday announcer Ben Fry talking about how it's only 75 quid to watch us play Watford. Sing Marching On Together. Watch us lose very badly. Go to takeaway curry outlet. Eat curry on train, crying into the brown paper bag when I'm done. Go home. Cry some more. It's a good life, eh? Away games are a lot better. 'Boozy haze' would be my matchday experience for most of those.
Assuming a saturday home match. Usually starts the day before the game for me, collect son from Uni. Matchday, leave around 9-30, call in at dads on the way for bacon butties. drive to narborough Rd to park, then trek to Local Hero for a beer. Down to the ground for another beer and balti, moan for two hours (joking), then back to car and a two hour drive home, hoping that wife has remembered to put a curry/lasagne in the oven on timer. Arrive home about 8pm, then take son back to Uni late Sunday afternoon. 90 minutes? It's a full-on weekend!
Usually drop my wife off at the ground for 1pm, then go and park the car and walk to the 1884 bar where my wife has got the drinks in. Have a couple of pints in there whilst watching whatever footie match is on Sky. Then into the ground for about 2.45, walk back to the car afterwards and then home. Used to go to Robert Peel for pre-match pints where u can have a *** with a pint - but bit too far for my wife to walk now (arthiritis).
steve, that experience sounds outstanding. my main problem is i will finish my degree soon where i will then move in with my girl presumably, but she hates football/general sport and lives in kent....
Sounds like you have some work to do there. You either need to get her into football or lay down the law. Or go Andy Gray on her. When the football is on she get in the kitchen and does the housework
I hope none of you go to the Counting House for a pint before the game. Nice building and that, but it's got to be the worst service I've encountered anywhere, ever.
Ha!. Work it out pounds per hour, and it's a cheap as chips. Big bonus is of course, I get to spend best part of 8 hours in the car with my lad just catching up on what he's been up to at Uni, plus we get him for the whole weekend as well. Thas the best of him being only 30+ miles from home - glad he didnt choose Leeds Uni!!
Nice touch that. Me and my dad, unknowingly, seem to have made the sport 'our thing' over the years and get down to as many as we can as our catch up. We enjoy the game, and for the rugby a couple of pints before hand, whilst also hearing about what the other one has been doing.
