An ITV spokesman said: 'It was appropriate action in an early morning

Cerny, have a look at wikipedia and it will show that the term was introduced into the English language in 1542 and is descibed thus "To "call a spade a spade" is to speak honestly and directly about a topic"

The ethnic slur is described "The phrase predates the use of the word "spade" as an ethnic slur against African-Americans, which was not recorded until 1928; however, in contemporary U.S. society, the idiom is often avoided due to potential confusion with the slur"

I think Jim is referring to the former rather than the later.

Cerny...have a day off for ****'s sake. Calling "a spade a spade" is a SAYING. It means straight talking. Only idiotic people who are LOOKING for racism would find that offensive!! It's like saying "accident black spot" or "blackboard".
Call someone a spade and that is definitely racist!!!!!
    What he said definitely isn't!!

Cerny was correct IMO, given his previous posts, it was meant like that.

Only by people deliberately looking for it and people that love trying to find racist connotations in even the most innocent of scenarios. The real protagonists are people like this that enjoy stirring something up from nothing.

It's clearly an old saying that everyone has heard of and, used in the context it was and from the general tone of James' post, that's how it was intended. Pretty clear.

I actually thought you were joking at first with what you said and just winding people up(which would've been mildly amusing to me), sadly I should've known better, sense of humour bypass an' all.

Some people seem to have a real chip on their shoulder over James, sad really.
