What is so wrong about being upbeat about our chances this season?

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by Hoddle is a god, Nov 23, 2011.

  1. I've just been slagged-off by another Spurs fan, in a discussion on the Chelsea board, for being upbeat about our chances in the EPL this year.

Okay, I know that I am a far more optimistic person than most people out there and that I do have a tendency to see the cup as half full rather than half empty, but I am also a very level-headed and deep-thinking person. I'm not like the average Mickey Mouser who believes every year is going to be our year, regardless of the grim realities of the state of the club and the squad.

The thing is, I genuinely do believe that we have a very good chance of finishing 3rd this season and a reasonable chance of finishing 2nd. Many of you might not agree with that assessment, but you could not call me deluded for believing that, given the way we are playing, the depth of our squad, Harry's track-record since joining us, our healthy financial status, not to mention the crises going on at 'Pool, Chelsea, United and Arsenal. Never have we looked so good in the league at this point in the season, and never have our opponents looked so vulnerable.

What is so wrong about me being upbeat when talking other fans, especially those (like the Chavs and the Gooners) who will stop at nothing to put us down?

Am I embarrassing you all with my confidence in our beloved Spurs?

There's nothing wrong with being upbeat about our chances, though I prefer a more grounded approach myself.
People are entitled to their opinion of your opinion though, especially if they believe that you're gloating, boasting, WUMing or provoking fans of other clubs.
I'm not suggesting that this is what you're doing, but some fans prefer to see a more humble and measured response this early in the season.

    Who's the other Spurs fan?

  4. PNP, I hear what you say. However, the reality is that very few of the Chavs, Gooners or Mickey Mousers will give us one shred of credit. Not one. And anything you or I might utter regarding our delight about how well we are doing is going to feel like a knife between their ribs. These people literally find it impossible to say anything good about us, even when the evidence is kicking them hard in the bollocks.

The reaction of some Spurs fans to this is to be humble and to keep quiet; mine, on the other hand, is to sing and dance about it and give that knife a little twist.

I wouldn't dare to criticise you, a fellow follower of my beloved Spurs, on how you choose to celebrate your own joy at how we are faring, which is why I am somewhat startled that I should have been attacked by one of our own for celebrating in my own fashion.

My take on all this is this. Everything could have gone tits-up for us, come May. If it does, at least I've had a good old song and dance along the way <ok>

  5. That would be impolite of me Mr Thor. I have nothing against him, and I forgive him for what he said, as, in his own way, he was probably trying to save me from my own effusions.

Superal's comment, so others can judge it on it's merits:

    From this thread:
    http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/102934-What-Chelsea-need-to-do-to-win-the-PL-CL

Pretty harmless and polite, in my opinion.
Certainly not an attack, by any means.

"Am I embarrassing you all with my confidence in our beloved Spurs?" Certainly not, as far as I'm concerned, and more power to you. I tend to be downbeat because I half-believe it's bad luck to sound too optimistic. (Which of course is stupid. I have a friend who believes, with much better reason, that it's bad luck to be superstitious.) The truth is it's all to play for. Nothing's written in stone. How can you explain Man City's looking invincible in the Prem and inept in Europe, except that teams, however good or bad looking, are very volatile collections of people and liable at any moment to play much better or much worse than their individual talents warrant.

Can't say that I agree with this, either.
I've even had two West Ham fans tell me that we're the only Premier League team that they'd gladly pay to go and watch, in the past couple of weeks.

  9. They are exceptions to the rule, in my experience.

I'm talking about posters on this site, by the way, not fans in general. My best mate, the life-long Chelsea fan, is very complimentary about Spurs, and disparaging of his own side's antics this season in equal measure.

Whilst his opinion about Spurs' chances may or may not be true, his conclusion is correct.
Every time you spam a board with your claims about Spurs, you potentially push a bunch of fans into a position where they're waiting to retaliate.
Where will that retaliation take place?
On here, against the rest of us.

That is exactly the point of me saying something on the other thread. I didn't mean to offend and it wasn't an attack by any means.

That's what their mod do to us, for wumming far less than the like of The Drag Queen's Bollocks and Hammershiteblue.

You've not been banned from the Chelsea board, HIAG.
Hammersmithblue has been banned from this board.

Intentionally provoking fans of other teams and then attempting to retreat to this one and expecting the mods here to deal with the **** that you've stirred up is taking the piss, frankly.

    Christ almighty, you don't listen do you? I'll repeat from scratch what I think of this whole situation to HOPEFULLY put it at rest;

Spurs will more than likely finish top four, you have a terrific side and are playing nice football AND winning at the same time - not once have I denied that. I believe our squad is still better than yours overall, which is just opinion (just like yours), AND a new manager who's trying to implement his own style into an ageing team.

Your opinions aren't the thing that bug me or many others on the Chelsea board because they are fair opinions judging by the way you are producing results - it's some of the things you say after these points such as insulting our manager/players and branding yourself as a far superior team and all this despite it only being November. That constitutes as being a WUM in my book and if I did the same on here I'd definitely be banned.

Oh and to call me a WUM is literally pot kettle black <ok>

There is a thin line between conidence and giving it the biggun HIAG. Anybody doing here what you do on other boards, would be given a right kicking by everybody including you and rightfully so. As PNP says, what you are doing is taking the piss. You are causing trouble and then running back to the safety of your own crowd and expect them to back you up, like some demented characature of a football yobbo up the front for the singing and taunting the opposition, and at the back for the fighting.

  18. I don't think that is what I'm doing, and if you took your nose out of PNP's ring-piece for long enough, you'd probably see that.
