Last season, and in the close season, Neil Danns was apparently our No.1 target. Johnathan Greening was also mentioned once or twice. So, as we continue to seemingly pursue the £850k signing of yet another defender, and our eventual 'blue-chip' midfield signing, Paul McKenna continues to 'shine' in the Neil Danns role, why do we continue to lambast our mis-firing strikers. With the service, they will eventually come good. The team still needs a 'class' midfield provider - and I dont mean Bullard!
We got priced out and then found they don't grow on trees. We were a top half Championship side last season. Getting players in who are better than what we have costs money. Hopefully once we've cleared Bullard, we might get a little bit more investmenet from the Allam's. Not that I'd expect it, they've done enough.
I agree but it is obvious that those two moved for very large wages and in Greening's case, the chance to work with Shteve McLaren again. WHEN we eventually get the central midfielder we need it will cost a fair few quid and I dont think it is going to happen unless we can clear Jimmy off the wages.
Jimmy was supposed to be our creative midfielder but after Slovenia, that plan went tits up. Kisser mag showed a few of our shortlisted players if Bullard went so I would imagine that we'll look to bring one in.
Yeah we missed out on our main targets and with Bullard back in the squad it looked like we had the best creative midfielder in the league.....................then as you say it all went tits up. I wouldnt be suprised to see another 3-4 players come in on a mixture of purchases and loans. Does anybody know what NP stance on Oli is, are we likely to see him in the team/squad when fit, I know we will get rid if we can to save on wages but if we cant does NP rate him
Billy davies spent most of his time upsetting the forest board by asking for investment to improve the squad, we sign Mckenna and Adebola on free transfers from forest and we expect them to improve us, as at forest they are ageing squad players. Creative goalscoring midfielders, 15-20 goal strikers dont come along for free unfortunatley they command good transfer fees and wages untill we realise that we are scratching around hoping.
Out of interest where did Kisser Mag get this shortlist from and who was on it ? I can't imagine the club has contacted the magazine and told them who we are looking at possibly buying/bringing in. I'd say( without seeing it)that the list is an educated guess/wish list of the editor or one of the journo's. In all fairness I think we are stuck with what we've got.I hope to God I'm wrong because a creative spark in the middle of the park is needed.Saying that I rate Cairney,I just don't think he will control games week in week out.To push on we need a quality play maker but who can grab hold of a game and pull the strings from the middle of the park. The question is, who fits the bill and how much would they cost ? Like has been said they don't grow on trees and don't come cheap. I've heard Wesley Sniejder fancies playing in England, let's give him a bell.
Do you REALYY believe that? I think the powers that be gave Bullard enough rope to hang himself by welcoming him back into the squad for pre-season. Bullard being thick as pigshyte gladly accepted and fell right into the trap. He was NEVER going to be part of Nigel Pearson's set-up. I cannot think of a player less "Pearsonesque" than Bullard.
Have people forgotten the loan window is about to open? Last season arguably our most influential player were loans. Why would that be any different this season?
There's another thread up this morning saying we've had 32 shots in two games, so we can't exactly blame the lack of service for the strikers' failings. Clearly the service is there but the strikers are messing it up. I originally thought this myself, but over time I've become more encouraged by Cairney, Evans and McKenna, and I think at the moment. I would value centre back cover and perhaps a further striker over getting a new midfielder in.
"...I wouldnt be suprised to see another 3-4 players come in on a mixture of purchases and loans...." Personally I would! Any new faces 'in-the-building' will be kids or budget buys released at the end of last season
I think we'll at least see a centre back and a striker come and I wouldn't be surprised if Simpson was on his way shortly.
I'd be having a go at encouraging Darren Ambrose up North, I'd also be asking serious questions about our strikers (McClean hasn't had the chance to show if he has improved yet) but the others on the evidence of 2 games with something to play for look woefully inadequate. Chopra looks like he was a bargain for Ipswich, we need similar at this level unproven players are a gamble.
Based on informed info No.1? Or simply speculation based on Simpson's manner and attitude? I personally think we 'at least' need to have a re-think on midfield options. Devitt is Division 4 at best. Atkinson has gone i believe? Gavan Holohan isn't ready. Tom Cairney will come good but needs time and mentoring on the field. etc. etc.
Surely if he was going to be on his way we'd need to find a buyer, which I doubt there is. I'd have thought he'd still have a part to play this season.
