What do you think would happen if Mercedes start on the harder slower compound tyres?

I would like to see mercedes start at least one of their cars on the slower harder compound tyres.. I know it might never happen but it would be interesting to see that scenario played out. The one on the harder tyre would run a much longer first stint then when the others pit for the harder tyre he should be flying on new softer tyres with much less fuel... It would make for an interesting end result. How do you think something like that would play out?

That would depend on how qualifying panned out for the driver on the harder compound and on the overall track conditions... and on how many stops were anticipated... and any safety car periods.

You would imagine it would be better overall to be on the softer compound when fuel weight is lower towards the end of a race but that would also depend on how swamped in traffic you might become early on.

There's a reason why nobody has ever won starting on the primes in the current Pirelli tyres.. It's because the undercut the Soft's get on each stint is much more valuable than the pace at the end on the softer compound. Whoever starts on the primes would probably still come second though, because of their pace advantage.

Hamilton would win, Rosberg would come second after waiting 30 laps to overtake someone on track.

Wouldnt the car that did the first long stint on hards be able to do a longerstint on thesoft than the others as he will be on much lower fuel? But I could undderstand the point Sgt is making in terms of safety car and grid position. Maybe one ill make a mistake in qualifying and start 11th on the grid and then maybe Mercedes will give it a try...lol

Come on..Rosberg isnt that bad. Yes I agree he takes a little long sometimes to overtake but maybe his problem last race could be because of the problems he was having with the car..could be.

Too many variables to take in to account to just generally say what might happen. We've seen drivers do it in the past with great success.... but It's reliant on many things. More of a gamble than anything else.

Rosberg has speed, and he's not a bad driver. I think Miggs is questioning if he has the killer instinct when it comes to having to make that carve through the field.

I think it would be fun though to see someone like Lewis starting in 11th with the hard tyres and a perfectly working car. That would make for a great spectacle. Maybe it will happen before the season is done.

Too much risk of getting Maldonado' d.

May see it if there's a penalty or such... but doubt by choice.

My views on Rosberg havn't changed, but now that he has such a dominant car his lack of overtaking ability is being shown.

Give Rosberg a little more time. The season has just started, just give him time to get into that very quick car ok... Let's see going forward what he can really do. I am sure that after those last three races he will have a point to prove. Give him a chance. Same for Vettel, give him a chance to deal with whatever is bothering him on the Red Bull right now, also will want to prove a point too, so let's see what happens going forward.

With qualifying now changed to Q2 tyres you could still get onto the front row but start on the slower tyre. Assuming Hamilton keeps out pacing Rosberg (which I doubt) then it might be worth a punt for Rosberg.

Assuming that they keep such an advantage... Otherwise he could go backwards pretty quickly.

How much time does Rosberg need? he's had a few years in F1 and still can't overtake, his moves are like a little kid dipping his toe in the bath that finds it's always too hot.
