This article pretty much explains what will probably happen to the money. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/football_league/article7070442.ece âClubs spend money they do not have,â he said. âThey spend next yearâs income. They spend money that will not arrive for two years and say, âBut weâll have some success and bring in more cash to cover the shortfall.â It cannot be sustained. âIn good times you need to be saving money for the bad times. If we reach the Premier League, I would like to be in a position where we did not need parachute payments. In good years you should put money away for the bad years.â - Nicola Cortese Not that we need to spend much more on players anyway
I don't think we'll spend more than £6-8million. I think CB is still the priority, but we can certainly afford a quality striker as well now, and I think we should get cover on the right wing from the loan market, or from our youth system. In the other thread I was trying to work out what our transfer budget should be - I heard it was £5million at the start of the window. £5 million - £750k for Cork - £1 mil for De Ridder + £750k for Puncheon (hopefully?) + £12 mil for Chamberlain leaves us with £16million, but I don't think all of the fee will go into the transfer market.
Well if they don't spend it, and they needn't, that's Markus's initial investment returned to him. You could say the Liebherr family now own Southampton FC for free. Not bad at all.
It will go safely into the coffers to pay off the debt on redeveloping Staplewood. Basically, we've just done up our training ground for nothing!
I'm happy with the way Cortese operates and the sentiments about being wise with the money. Whilst a football club should operate within its means, it is also not a business and should not make a profit. It's essentially a sports club and like any amateur sports club around the country any money paid in should be invested into the club. If Cortese so wished he could pay back the loan of 7.5 million paid by Liebherr and try to run the club with the remaining pot of money. We already have Chamberlains replacement in De Ridder and any signings made will be to tweak and improve on the squad, we don't have to make any emergency signings to plug the gap left by a sold Chamberlain
By that logic, we've basically sold one talent to ensure that a whole bunch more comes through. Works for me!
Some will be spent on players and their wages, with some set aside. After all we'll need to spend in the Premiership next year
Cortese can spend it all on watches and chocolate for all I care. Looks like we already have a squad that can hold it's own in the Championship
Having been so close to closing our gates forever, I'm glad NC will look after the cash flow to ensure the long term success of our club If NC decides to use the majority of this cash to clear any outstanding loans (Staplewood etc) then great - do it In NC we trust
personally being a bit greedy, i wouldnt mind a centre back and striker. im expecting a suprise this week with a young pacey striker
