Even as a Gashead, I don't really know the answer to this question, so I want to know what others think: There are lots of players who can be called Rovers legends for different reasons, but what makes one? Is it someone who serves the club for several years, or does very well over a fairly short space of time? Is it someone who scores loads of goals, or someone who often scores them when it matters most? Is it someone who has worked really hard and given 100% whenever they have played in Blue and White and/or is a cult figure among fans? Does anyone who helps the club get promoted automatically get legendary status? Is it someone who scores the winner in a Bristol derby? Which of these players from the last 20 years are Rovers legends? Barry Hayles, Jamie Cureton, Peter Beadle, Jason Roberts, Andy Tillson, Vitalis Astafjevs, Nathan Ellington, Andy Rammell, Wayne Carlisle, Stuart Campbell, Paul Trollope, Junior Agogo, Richard Walker, Steve Elliott, Steve Phillips, Rickie Lambert, Ian Holloway, Gary Penrice, Marcus Stewart Any I missed?
Legends in blue Barry Hayles, Jamie Cureton, Peter Beadle, Jason Roberts, Andy Tillson, Vitalis Astafjevs, Nathan Ellington, Andy Rammell, Wayne Carlisle, Stuart Campbell, Paul Trollope, Junior Agogo, Richard Walker, Steve Elliott, Steve Phillips, Rickie Lambert, Ian Holloway, Gary Penrice, Marcus Stewart
It's very much a question of personal taste re the definition of a legend and it's probably a combination of those factors you mention MoT. My personal legends from that list are Rickie, Vitas, Hayles, Tillson, Elliott, Campbell, Ollie, Gary and Trolls. In addition, I will never forget little Sammy Igoe's legs going ten to the dozen as he scored that 3rd goal against the Shrews at Wembley. For me that makes him a legend!
It depends what generation you come from a chap I know has been watching BRFC since the 50's and the teams and players we never got to see during that time are also legends remember our championship winning side which included Geoff Bradford of the 52/3 season scored a club record of 92 goals and were apparantely an entertaining side! Can you name any of the squad? In 1956 we beat Man Utd's Busby Babes 4-0 how good is that Alfie Biggs and co I did not have the pleasure of watching them but again the older gen wax lyrical about some of those players and the team. What about the 1974 promo winning side Bannister and Warboys or the 72 Watney cup winning team again Frankie Prince and co. Our generation remembers the recent so called legends 2007 but you cannot forget the rich tapestry of players maybe some legends that played a part in our history. What about Rammell his goals kept us in the FL does he qualify as a legend I reckon so as we were the bookies favourites for dropping out of the football league until he joined us he would get one of my votes. Yeah, Igoe just slipped my mind somehow. I'm surprised no-one has named Walker as a legend yet, as his goals got us promoted, and is our highest scorer in the 21st century so far, with 63 to Lambert's 60.
i seen a glimps of this thread earlier and i was thinking walker from the lists mentioned. i will always remember his 2nd goal at wembley. that was a cracking goal which if scored by a prem player, people be raving about it. its someone who serves the club for several years. its someone who scores loads of goals and scores them when it matters. its someone who has worked really hard and given 100% whenever they have played in Blue and White. its someone who is a cult figure among fans. its someone who helps the club get promoted. its someone who scores the winner in a Bristol derby. i think its all of the above. boring answer i know but i think its spot on.
What about big Devon White he was a Twerton legend and Carl Saunders scored the goal that took us to Anfield
