Just thought some here might be interested in this review about the best clubs to go to for an away-day experience http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/27782311 For me it is going to the ground and admiring the architecture. It is great for example to go to Craven Cottage to see how the ground has been made suitable for the modern football fan, yet is still retains that old charm as some parts of the ground are more or less exactly as they were 50 years or more ago. Other grounds have gradually been rebuilt yet still retain the charm of a traditional ground due to the style of rebuild such as Anfield. On other occasions it is wonderful seeing an entirely new stadium and admiring the curves and the flowing roof (the Emirates). Anyhow it will be interesting to hear the thoughts of others.
I have found that almost every town or city I have visited is imeasurably improved by decent weather. Those late season afternoons where the atmosphere is almost carnival like. A win helps, but for me the most important thing is a decent travelling crowd in good voice and spirits.
Sun. Hot day and a sandy beach with next to nobody else on it because of little access apart from a boat. You'd be surprised how many there are on the South Coast. Oh, you meant football..?
A win and thats about it. Travelling home after a loss is tedious wherever it is. After a win its the exact opposite.
Interesting survey. Particularly as the two Liverpool clubs come so low. I find Goodison a horrible ground - that little barn they stick us in with restricted view and not even behind a goal. Good stewards are a help, and Everton and Liverpool are very good; United are OK if a little paranoid (all that going past people at a table before getting to the turnstile). The problem with some grounds is the total lack of atmosphere, and I'm not surprised that we come out well. Mates who support other teams tell me that a visit to SMS is very good for atmosphere - hats off to the nutters in the Northam. So, I like - being behind a goal; next to the home crowd making some noise; opposition fans who get into some pre-match banter; a decent view; friendly stewards. And winning! Liverpool away almost had this all last year (their crowd seem to have taken a vow of silence!).
Take liberties on their manor - Ale - Poncing about in home fans pubs - More Ale - Bit of Aggro - Go to Game - Give it large - More Ale - Bit of Beak - Some Garys - Ale - Aggro - Cop off with a local - Sleep it off in a cell. Perfick.
Crystal Palace last! Love that ground! Cardiff was a shocking experience when I was there for Ireland match last year. Stewards were the rudest I've ever encountered
