After watching MoTD today I am almost certain Harry Redknapp will take over Qpr early next week and I think we should see a rejuvinated Rangers against a man united struggling for form.

Firstly, those saying 'Arry would be a short fix, I think are wide of the mark. We're talking about the man a nation wanted to take over the national team, a man who took spurs (with funding I know but we have that) to champions league as well as years of europa league football also, a man who won the FA cup with Portsmouth and had relative success at West Ham.

I think he's ambitious, loves football, loves managing and likes his teams to have a go. His teams always play for him and when you get pro's talk about him, they all say his man-management is second to none, something that I think MH is lacking in. We all want the 11 on the pitch to play with pride and 100% commitment and i think HR will bring that.

All this nonsence of rumours he lacks tactical knowledge I find hard to believe, there have only been two managers of teams outside the so called 'top four' that have qualified for CL and I think you need to know your stuff to be that consistant over a season in arguably the toughest league in the world.

All in all I've always liked HR, loved the way his teams play (especially spurs) and believe there is no other person who is a perfect fit for our club.

I just hope he takes over. U Rsssss

I agree, Harry is the man for the job. Will instantly get the team behind him. The only problem will be he will defo want to bring in a few of his own in January. So the problem will be our hefty wage bill, for the deadbeats who Harry wouldn't want. I mean who else will pay Green, Bosingwa etc the type of money they are on at QPR ?

Let's be honest, he's a media darling, the majority of people love him. But I wouldn't think he'd want to be a short term option. We would have to be behind him 100% cos if it did happen I can't see TF changing it again in the summer.

Our major problem is that we are basically stuffed if we go down. The TV revenue money is so important that personally I think its worth paying Hughes off and then spending on a couple of defenders and a striker in Jan.

Just one other point sorry to ramble (don't come on here very often !), I wonder if the Mittals have a big say, with the MH decision...ie I read here a few weeks ago they were looking to sell up, maybe thev'e said to TF, we'll stay if you change the manager....

Definitely the man for the job.

Even if we don't get Arry, surely whoever we get will have the sense not to sign a bunch of injury-prone old men unlike Hughes.

I really struggle with this, Grifter. It is oft repeated that Redknapp is responsible for Pompey's plight; Beth made a similar comment a few days back.

But what do you think is the reality for the manager of a football team? Is he given ultimate control over the club's finances and final authority over player transfers and contract terms? Or do we think that, although charged with identifying the players he'd like to bring in and having input into their market value, it is possibly the Chairman, the board, the CEO or the club's owner that has this final say-so?

Sure, Portsmouth hit the buffers and continued along the tracks past the sign saying 'warning: bridge out', but surely Redknapp was only doing his job, in response to which the executive management of the club could have pulled their pants down and bent over less often?

When we go shopping, Mrs Uber holds up many, many items that she's "always wanted". Sometimes I buy them for her, but mostly I tell her that we can't afford them. If I let her have half the things she wanted, couldn't afford to pay the credit card bill and we had a housecall from Mr Bailiff, is that my fault or Mrs Uber's?

That's a very fair point, you're probably right. I suppose it's not really his job to conserve cash, he's simply going to spend whatever he's told he's allowed to spend. I do get the impression that a major factor in his success as a manager has been the readiness with which funds been made available to him though, which is something we can't afford to do.
After summer Mike Rigg et al. made it clear that they never intend to have such a busy transfer window again, and that they now consider our current squad to be of sufficient quality to not require much supplementation over the next few years. With that in mind, were Harry to arrive, he would have to be prepared to work under the constraints of only being able to sign 1/2 players every transfer window for the foreseeable future. Would that blunt his effectiveness?

I think you aren't wearing rose tinted specs, you've had your corneas and irises removed and replaced with pink tinged ones. I think almost the exact opposite about this dinosaur but I've posted on it already and won't bore everyone again.
If he does come I hope he is everything you think, and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not sure about his effectiveness, but I would not be too surprised if it blunted his enthusiasm to take the job. It seems to me that for most managers a condition for taking the job is that a sufficient transfer kitty is made available to them.

There has been much talk of the contract that Hughes is supposedly under, and the cost to terminate it. But I wonder also on what terms the various has-beens and journeymen have been signed under. How many can be relatively easily offloaded in January to help balance the books, and how many can simply sit on the bench whilst the club haemorrhages cash their way?

Perhaps the solution for Redknapp is a limited kitty for January, but a substantial Brucie Bonus if he keeps the club in the PL come the end of the season, after which a longer-term contract might be negotiated and further funding made available?

If Hughes and a good many of the signings have been made against lucrative and watertight contracts, then more fool Fernandes. The Sky 'Sunday Supplement' article I posted on another thread earlier, if true, is extremely worrying in this regard. Suppose the whole infrastructure of the club has been aligned towards the Rs being a Top Ten team long before it has become so, and on the assumption that this goal will be quickly achieved and is sustainable. Suppose the club is paying top dollar for everything, assuming in its arrogance that becoming an established Premier League team is a mere formality. Suppose that all contracts are above market average and were necessarily long-term in order to attract the Cesars and Graneros. That would be Portsmouth all over again. That would be QPR all over again. And, if so, would we blame Hughes... or Fernandes for making it so?

Great thread. Good comments by all.

I dont necessarily think HR will require a huge amount of funding straight away. I am confident with this current squad he can turn our form around and get us playing as a team - I am positive about that. He man manages superbly and knows how to get players going. We have a set of quality individuals - now that task is to make them a quality team.

    Nicely summed up mate.

As 'Arry said last night "lets wait and see".

I suppose we did have the other archetypal dodgy geezer in El Tel and the only thing I regret about him is him leaving.

........**** me I just compared Terry Venables, a tactical genius who took the whole game forward in this country to Harry Redknapp, a man who his own players say "we had a flip chart but he never used it" and " we never practiced set pieces in training, when they worked in a game it was luck and individual skill" (van der Vaart). Things must be dire....

nice heathly debate, i would like to add that i dont think HR is to blame for what went on at pompey, that is ultimatley the boards fault. He was given the funds, spent them as he saw fit and they had great players and were succesful, remember that game against AC milan, i mean seriously, pompey v ac milan!

as far as targets go, i would love to see an english/british hard as nails centre mid to protect our back 4, noone does it at the minute, Diakite, Granero and Ali are all talented but as well as a centre half and a quality striker we need a 25 year old Sean Derry

Agree with this. If he's offered the job it will be on the basis that there won't be a lot of funds to throw at the problem. TF has said all along our squad is good enough, which I agree with. It's just finding someone who can get them playing to their potential (and in their right f***ing positions). The club is run much better than the old Portsmouth so fears of a similar collapse under HR is unfounded, imo.

Great discursive thread starting with a particularly persuasive OP (well done Souper) minimally opposed by Stan (s_b) who we know has particularly strong anti-Redknapp views.

I think the one thing we all agree on is, not so much our fear as fans of going down but the fact of the club's financial commitment to a premier league future. If it all goes bang, we're Portsmouth, fact.

The investors are so committed that they now have absolutely no choice but to spend (this time very wisely) to secure their original investments. Not just 'Arry, but ANY manager is going to need to strengthen this mob big time. The upside is this means quality back and front as opposed to quantity. We do that, and with half decent management, we'll be solid as a rock and with strength-in-depth.

I'm not convinced by the 'we will be the next Portsmouth' argument - do we really know what the finances of the owners are? (or even the actual ownership structure of the club for that matter?)

TF, AB (and PB) seem to be shrewd businessmen - I'm not convinced that us going down would be the financial disaster that people are predicting. Yes, it would be financially 'damaging', especially given the increase in Sky revenues on offer next season that others on here have mentioned, but that does not mean we are automatically going to be heading for administration. My guess is that they have not gambled everything on this season, and are smart enough to know what the next move should be if the worst happens.

Hoping it won't be the case that we will find out...

I'd give anything to have Tel in charge. Now he would get the tactics right imo.
