Mine was being lifted over the hoarding to sit on the edge of the pitch, at the Lane, during a cup match. It would have been in about 1967, when I was 4 or 5 years old. I cannot recall who the opposition was, or what the score was, but I do remember the sheer numbers in the crowds, and the colossal noise we made when we scored a goal. I was terrified.
Hearing the explosive roar of the crowd from our Street., back in the early nineteen seventy-somethings. Jees !!! ..... has it really been that long.............
Mine was having Ian Walker come and open up the new gym refit at my local swimming pool, and having him sign my Match magazine....or was it shoot. hmmm Also, those little collectable figures with the Huuuuuuge heads. Les Ferdinand's looked in proportion.
Saw my first game as a nipper watching along the shelf (somehow!!!!). We beat Aston Villa 1-0 via an own goal.Blanchflower was playing right half for Villa but I can't remember him, then,or anything else! I do remember watching Preston at the Lane that season.Tom Finney didn't play but his sub,a lad named Campbell absolutely terrorized our ancient defence (Charlie Withers and Alf Ramsey) and we were hammered 6-2! I can remember going through the boys turnstile and the operator sending us through two at a time, making himself a bit of spare cash!!!!! We used to watch the old Spurs Band marching down the pitch with the leader throwing his, whatever they called it,and waiting for him to drop it!He actually did one year, much to our pleasure!!!!!
I should add, by the way, that AVB would have creamed his pants that day. If he had been born, that is.
Shankly also said "football is not a matter of life and death. It's more important than that!" I was thinking about that after the Hull Cup tie.I wonder how many Spurs fans don't have any nails left????
The guy selling goal time raffle tickets in the 60s. "Get your goal time tickets here lads, shilling a time, they're all shuffled up"
Seeing Klinsmann's return, I was at the Lane when all the cameras were waiting for him and I ended being on BBC News saying "I'm really happy" with a bright red face after being asked by the Journalist on what my thoughts were. Stand out early memory though is my first game at the Lane and Sir Les bagged a hat trick against Leicester. He was my hero at the time too so it was a really memorable day for me.
Some old bugger who'd been on Jason Dozzell's case the entire game causing the bloke in front of him to snap. When he said "Sit down and shut up", he got a round of applause.
