Arrseole! Harry Redknapp claims Queens Park Rangers simply didn’t assemble a good enough squad to survive in the Premier League. The Hoops, promoted from the Championship via the play-offs last season under Redknapp’s stewardship, were relegated from the top-flight on Sunday after crashing to a 6-0 defeat at Manchester City. And Redknapp, who left the Loftus Road hotseat in February citing the need for knee surgery, has suggested the club failed to invest heavily enough last summer. “Nine of the team that started yesterday played in the Championship last year when we got up in the play-offs," he told talkSPORT. “We finished twenty points behind [champions] Leicester and almost the same behind [runners-up] Burnley and nine of those lads are still playing. "Eleven of the twenty-five in the squad that was there when I arrived were part of the team which went down two years ago. "It has been difficult. We spent good money on three players. Two of them played yesterday, only Sandro didn't. "The thing they have got in their favour is they have a fantastic chairman, a good board, and they have got good supporters as well, who are very loyal to the club. "But you have to be realistic. Nine of the eleven were playing in the Championship last year and, at the end of the day, we fell short. We weren't good enough." I was just about to write the same mate. He is right even though a large part is down to Harry himself.
This is Harry trying to re-invent history... and not for the first time (remember, he only took 12 players on the pre-season trip to Ireland... yeah, right). I recall Fernandes saying that, pre-season, he bought all the players that Harry had [reasonably] requested. I believe him. To me, with the exception of Ferdinand, they looked a reasonable bunch of acquisitions in terms of quantity and affordability, the former being modest enough to assimilate into the existing squad. Sure, we could quibble over one or two decisions ( for example, the sale of Simpson, the need for an extra forward after Remy left) but he had enough to do considerably better than he did. I gave Redknapp's integrity the benefit of the doubt when he joined us but he has proven than my trust was mis-placed: nowadays, I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him. I think the larger football world can now see him for what he is and these pronouncements just make him look a complete joke: Mr Teflon.
I dont think the the squad was ever good enough for the PL, whoever's fault that was and Harry had a big part in that. We were short about everywhere except Keeper and arguably an almost adequate DCM and LB. But not adequate with as it also turned no fit No 10's, no quick or really PL quality CB, except possibly Ned who was needed at RB, no decent wide man other than Phillips once Ramsey let him play there right side, only 1 who could defend at RB, no midfielder who could be counted on to pass accurately, only 2/3 strikers with the the one who scored our goals being unable to do much else with anyone other than Bobby. Not enough, and when we didn't take the opportunity to repair in January and a Manager who didn't do tactics and gave up on away games we were always Fkkd.
How can he say that without adding, 'oh yeah, and it was entirely my fault.' The man is a media craving lunatic who can't see that it was all of his own making.
