From the BBC - Never heard of this comeback before ! Bill Shankly is arguably one of the greatest managers in history but had also been on the receiving end of one of the biggest comebacks in football. While in charge of Huddersfield back in 1957, Shankly's side were leading 5-1 at Charlton with 30 minutes of the game left. Three points in the bag, you would think. Charlton - and more specifically left-winger Johnny Summers - had other ideas. Summers scored five to give Charlton a 6-5 lead with two minutes left. Huddersfield equalised but Summers set up John Ryan to score the winner with the last kick of the game. Sterling stuff! Takes me back to the Boxing day game against Weds when we were 4-1 down with 10 mins to go UTT
No I wouldn't think that as it was 2 points for a win in the good old days! PS I saw that Boxing Day game against the Wendies when we were 4-1 down with 7 minutes left! We almost made it 5-4 but hit the post.
The journalist will be too young I suppose but you'd think a sports reporter would know about the points change. I was at that Boxing Day game but are you sure it was still 4-1 with as little as 7 minutes left?
That is what sticks in my memory. I know many of the supporters had streamed out the ground only to hear the roars as they walked down the surrounding streets. I stayed until the end. Probably the highlights are online somewhere... I think it was televised by Anglia TV
One of my earliest memories of going to watch City this, my Dad had only just started taking me the year before. Still one of the most exciting climaxes to a football match I've ever seen.
It was the only match I missed that season! I was dragged by my parents to my Grandmother's. We weren't allowed to watch the results on television. No radio in the car in those days. I only found out the next day.
I missed the bus back to OPE because it was full and left early ! That was my first season as a pass holder at the age of 8 I'll always thank my parents for that birthday present
Now amended Bill Shankly is arguably one of the greatest managers in history but had also been on the receiving end of one of the biggest comebacks in football. While in charge of Huddersfield back in 1957, Shankly's side were leading 5-1 at Charlton with 30 minutes of the game left. Two points [as was awarded in those days] in the bag, you would think. Charlton - and more specifically left-winger Johnny Summers - had other ideas. Summers scored five to give Charlton a 6-5 lead with two minutes left. Huddersfield equalised but Summers set up John Ryan to score the winner with the last kick of the game. Sterling stuff! What do you feel is the greatest comeback in sport? Let us know #bbcsportsday
Ah you must be a year youger than me, I started going the season before at age 8, hence the username and I see you're either another defector to the South Bank like me or you've always been over here.
Summer Defected 6 years ago but near you soon. Plans to move to Wrawby If you fancy car sharing drop me a PM
I was also at the match. As far as I remember, it was. Chris Chilton mentioned it at Cottingham OSC a couple of years ago
