Please move if this is on another thread... More torrential rain forecast tonight with up to another two inches of rain in the area over Monday and Tuesday... Amazing to read what they are doing and have done. 400 one tonne sandbags covered in concrete filling the damaged area. It would take 8 days to pump it out into already flooded surrounding rivers and so far its been reduced just one metre. The dam is 8 meters deep. 55 more homes evacuated... doesn't look good.
Admirable English sang froid from the locals. Philosophical, no blubbing, no scapegoating, no political opportunism.... unlike some large cities in the south of this country. Very few countries in the world produce cultures of this calibre even if it is no longer uniform here sadly. Was talking to a business associate on Friday who works '5 mins away' from this and lots of the workforce can't make it across the valley to work. His premises will experience flooding and lots of employees also if the dam breaks. My "Have a good weekend mate" was pathetically inadequate after we had discussed the dam break scenario in detail.
Pictures now being shown of trees growing on the reservoir walls from 3 years ago... one expert saying this would definitely have weakened the structure... I suspect every other reservoir in the country will now be having 'proper' checks...
