By Chris Young Published on Monday 18 July 2011 11:30 ASAMOAH Gyan and Keiren Westwood have been all but ruled out of Sunderlandâs German pre-season tour. Manager Steve Bruce is taking no chances with the pair with the duo, who did not feature in yesterdayâs 1-1 draw with Third Division Arminia Bielefeld and are unlikely to participate in the remaining two games against Hannover 96 and Borussia Monchengladbach. Ghana hitman Gyan only returned to training last week after being given extra leave following his international commitments during the summer, while Westwood remains hampered by the shoulder problem sustained during the final month of his tenure at Coventry. Instead, Sunderland are finalising another pre-season friendly, expected to take place in Scotland on Wednesday, July 27, where Gyan and Westwood will make their comebacks. Boss Bruce told the Echo: âWeâre just working on Asaâs general fitness levels at the moment. He did the work-out before the game yesterday. âHe was still playing in the middle of June with Ghana and was obviously training up until then too. âWeâve just given him a bit of an extra break and now weâre seeing when heâll be ready. But I would be surprised if I play him on tour. âWe need 10 days of fitness with him ready for the game next week which we are hoping to organise. âKeiren has had this ongoing shoulder injury. We hope we can get the go-ahead to play him in that game too but heâs another who I canât see playing on tour.â Bruce will adopt a similarly cautious approach over defenders John OâShea and Wes Brown. OâShea was taken off just 34 minutes into yesterdayâs encounter after feeling a slight niggle with his hamstring â an injury which is not expected to be a serious one. Brown was absent altogether and is unlikely to feature against Hannover on Wednesday either after sustaining a knock in training. Bruce added: âJohnâs okay. He got a slight hamstring niggle and Iâm not going to take any risks. Itâs just precautionary at the moment. âI donât think Wes will play on Wednesday, weâre just erring on the side of caution at the moment. âItâs very slight, but the last thing Iâm going to do is take a chance on someone who has got a niggle
Sound to me like Gyan has had some time off and been on the pies. Needs to lose some weight and get fit. Even a few extra lbs can put extra stress on hamstrings, knee/ankle ligaments, especially when playing at full pace. Even at my level of sport I notice it when I put a bit of extra weight on, I am very fit but still not at the level these guys are at. I think Bruce is being sensible, get Gyan fit then bring him in slowly.
Strange...... GYAN was at Bilefeld yesterday, didnt play, but a lot of the new lads got a game, fifty quid says he plays , no later than Gladbach. so **** the rumour mongers. and O SHEA, did I witness somthing different? Syd , when you cut and paste another mans article, you should make a statement, for or against, unless its a sensative article, you are getting lazy mate.
Was not an attack, but I would like an oppinion not a cut and paste, and I know you are not my best fan, but stop sucking dick . just to have a dig. by the way hows your sticky thread, after all your ****e, you didnt look at the internet, for what was it 9HOURS, and your words I believe were` FIRST THING YOU LOOK FOR WHEN YOU GET UP`
as i also stated i dont have alot of time some mornings, your post was 9am ish, i had checked at 7ish and gone about my day. it was an idea that the mods decided not to do, fair enough. I suggested it i didnt command it as you seem want to do.
Hasn't Westwood been injured for some time now? Seems to be taking his time recovering, a shoulder injury on a keeper, hopefully not a recourrent injury.
