    You bottled it !
    Absolute disgrace !

I'm talking about the last minute possible breakaway that was begging to be taken. Weston 'only' had to ride the last man tackle and he had a clear run on goal.

I don't think I've ever seen any player pull out of a challenge in such a shameful way before. It's not as if he was any good during the game - do you remember his shots on goal - dreadful.
I may run the risk of upsetting some of you - but especially when we're fighting to avoid getting into a relegation scrap, I demand committment - or don't bother putting on the shirt

    Sorry always,
You've come on with no mention of winning the game, no mention of a clean sheet, no mention of Crawley being on an unbeaten run, no mention of the 90 minutes effort from the whole team.

Just a whinge about one player! this time you, as always are wrong. I'd change your beer for the next game.

I didn't realise that it was a pre requisite that I had to do a 'camel' story extolling the brave exploits of our boys in blue, before I dare to express an opinion about a player - an opinion that has been remarked by many other members on here.

I make no apology for concentrating on Weston. I was appalled by his cowardice towards the end of the game - he embarrassed himself. There was a huge collective groan from all around me when Weston 'gave way' in THAT tackle.
There is NOTHING of which I could be more ashamed that compares with Weston's cowardice.
I do feel sorry - but for the other players - whilst we got lucky and won the game - it wasn't with much thanks to Weston.

I am grateful for the three points. The game was reasonably entertaining - inasmuch that there were many chances - and there could easily have been many more goals - especially if the Crawley players weren't so wasteful. How we didn't concede is something of a minor miracle - and lets not forget the shocking marking where we allowed their forwards so much room.
Legge came to our rescue on many occasions - although it has to be said that the Crawley keeper pulled off a couple of good saves.

We might have had some of the good fortune that has been missing in some recent games - but I keep telling you it's not the losing that I mind - it's the lack of 'trying'

I didn't start this thread with a view to show my appreciation for the efforts of any of the players - it was to express my opinion of Weston. I will not deny you to have your opinion - you have rebuked me for not mentioning some of the positives. I have addressed [in some small way] this matter. Now would you like to express any opinion (even contrary - with qualification) about the subject matter of this thread.

Not sure what you are trying to achieve with this post. I don't recall weston pulling out of a tackle we know that isn't in his game anyway, I thought he played pretty well to be fair to him a lot better than he has done and gave us a good outlet and some natural width. The Crawley fans seem to praise him as well. Singling him out for one tackle seems unfair and he made at least two great tackles in our area today. I appreciate that you are frustrated by his supposed lack of effort and he hasn't helped himself at times this season but credit where credit is due today.

As for the game I'm not sure how it didn't end 5-5 and it was pretty entertaining. Legge and barrett were immense but I doubt they will get any praise for the performance however hewitt was exposed time and time again it was lucky that Billy Clarke didn't have a left foot. As this thread has started to slate players the day Gregory plays a decent forward pass without taking 4-5 touches will be a first. He and hessy in the middle together doesn't work they are too similar however I thought hessy was like a terrier today.

3 more wins should see us safe and we still have 3 off the bottom 5 to play at home!

P.s to the guy sitting behind me who yelled barrett the carrott it wasn't funny the first time you said it so please don't repeat it 500 f**king times especially when he hardly put a foot wrong

Weston did pull out of a tackle late on or rather skip over it, he was always going to be last to the ball and would simply have given away a free kick in a dangerous area late in the game, for me he did exactly the right thing. That said my first post was tongue in cheek and I used a emoticon to convey that.

Below is the view of a Crawley fan.

"Just home and a long day for such a short trip.
    Initial thoughts:
We were woeful, but credit to Gillingham.More desire and spanked us down the flanks, our right side particularly.
We didn't create that much, but when we did we didn't really look like scoring.
Liked the look of their live wire in the middle....dominated from start to finish.
For all the silly play off talk,I can see us having a bit of a run now,so we could yet get dragged in to a fight at the wrong end.
Gillinghams support was decent and ours......quiet.Too many newbies who don't know how to react when things ain't going to plan.
    Next........ "

Alas I could not go today to see our fine win but I have read the various Gills forums and most posters have said that Weston had quite a good game today and there is no other mention of this mystical jump out of the tackle. And to be brutal if the posters on Gillinghamfansonline and Kentonline, where many are Weston haters, there is no mention of it that seems a bit strange. Also to me it is odd that after such an important and vital win to create a thread to pick and have a go at one player and make no comment`s of the match you have seen is a little bizarre. However due to the originators quite humorous user name and previous posts from said person I will give the post the `tongue in cheek` respect they are no doubt looking for. Well done Myles, well played Gills , great team win! Ps Myles don`t shirk out of any tackles, we don`t want to annoy any of our fellow Gills not606 posters

    1. There was nothing 'mystical' about the jump out of the tackle - it happened (even grumpygit, in his 'attack' on me agrees - as do others ) ( remember I was at the game) - Not exactly correct to claim an event as mystical if you were not there !
    2. I do not hate Weston as a person - my opinion is that - for the 'sometimes' when he is good - it is not enough to deserve a contract.
    3. Maybe the people whom you claim hate Weston were also NOT at the game.
    4. Every match is vital - all 46 league games, cup matches etc - I expect commitment from the players - especially in a circumstance that could have helped wrap up the win.
    5. I have apologised for not writing a 'war & peace' effort on this game - I usually reserve my tome for my away games - because I appreciate that a lot of fans are unable to attend too many of those.
    6. My concentration of one aspect of the match was as frustration with a player - whose ability as a footballer I do not hold in high esteem.
    7. Whilst my opinion of Weston may not be shared with others ( we are all entitled to our individual opinions ) I hardly think that anyone can honestly say that I care more about slating a player for one incident, than about the whole teams performance . It is because I care and am blindingly passionate about the Gills that I care about the result and the effect on the whole team that just one bad decision can have in undoing good work.
    8. My thread was not tongue in cheek - unlike my username - please do not let yourself get engrossed by my username.
    9. It doesn't matter which player shirks out of a tackle - if they do they are not worthy of putting on a Gills shirt - they will always upset me.

I was invited to a corporate day by a supplier, so I had a different view to what I normally get from the GRS.
I thought our back 4 had generally reasonable games with both the centre backs (Legge especially) having good games. Hewitt,I think needs a defence minded midfielder in front of him to help him out,but that will be rectified when Harriman returns. I've always quite liked Gregory, but yesterday was not a good game for him, and he seemed to make numerous errors.Weston,on the other hand, who I have been very critical of in the past, in my opinion had his best game for a year. Cody was starved of service until Bayo came on,because their defence had a lot more to worry about with the big man ( I noticed that every time a Crawley player got the ball and Bayo was in touching distance, they hoofed it away as quick as they good, not caring where it went) than the very ineffective Pigott. I've seen him 3 times now, and I'm afraid I don't rate him at all. ***in was up and down in his performance, sometimes being quite clever and other times being woeful. Charlie was excellent when he came on,and the cynic in me wonders if its anything to do with wanting a new contract? Young Hess is a star in the making with a very composed performance. We could and maybe should have lost on our first half performance, but once Bayo and Charlie came on we looked a far better side. I hope Taylor keeps the same team that finished the game, to start against Coventry on Tuesday

    Differing views and my pennies worth. I suppose my view will be seen as bias because I have clearly stated in the past that i' not a fan of Weston. The reasons i previously gave for this were;

Lack of concentration, feet to quick for his brain, no strength for the final finish required down the wing, ie Obita or Barcham style. Would be better as a striker.

I'm not being nasty to the guy, I personally have no problem with him but the above are measurable views that I constantly see.

So what about yesterday? I'm not sure what posters are on about with the 'skip' out of the tackle, maybe i wasn't paying attention at that point. However, again I felt he never had that final finish, that pass that was accurate enough to serve the purpose of a winger. What's the point of a steam train when it just constantly hits the buffers.

My view may have been slightly tainted by the moans about Weston around me, but i'm sure most of you know me by now to also know i'm not swayed by majority opinion.

Though in fairness to Weston the only main gripe I had on the day was his corner taking. Two left footed crosses, one so wide of the outside of the box, where was it going, the other the opposite too close to the keeper. Just give the ball to Hessy, hence next corner 88th minute Hessy, Lee, Goal!

So how did i rate Weston at the end of the day...I turned to my son and said get rid, was that a bias view based on my previous opinions of him, maybe. Who would i replace him with, don;t know, so dilemma.

What would I have done if PT, not have loaned Piggot and stuck Weston up front with Cody

ps. I should have added that i feel Joe Martin is far more effective as an attacking wing back and manages to get himself into places that Weston does not. MA employed this tactic and one i liked. The problem with this is our full backs are to slow to cover for his role in going forward or is that the fault of midfield?...although that brings in another argument against my preference as a youngster at the back to cover this hole. I accept that idea fell apart at the game where Hewitt got sent off due to Davies being outdone.

I'm glad after a win (albeit a slightly fortunate one) that some people are still able to pick out a member of the squad for criticism when we should be happy with the win. Westy played well and not going into a 50/50 makes him a disgrace does it? Westy is all about pace and trickery admittedly the later lets him down but critiquing him for not riding a challenge is absolute nonsense. Get over it quite frankly, he played well and picking once instance in the match where he was poor is petty to say the least, possibly because you don't like the player generally? It's a bit like me saying Nelson is a disgrace and doesn't deserve to wear the shirt of a slightly misplaced goal kick (I actually really like nelson but was the best example i could think of). Move on and support the club rather than complain about meaningless little incidents, if we lost then granted but seeing as we won a crucial game I cant tolerate such drivel.

Weston does not deserve to be slated for a "mixed bag" performance. Crawley treated him with great respect in terms of marking. If the so called shameful non tackle was the one over by Gordon Rd side 5 mins from the end it looked like good sense. The immediate conversation around me in the Medway Stand was that only Charlie Lee would have made a full challenge and that it would not only have resulted in a red card but it would have left him injured for the rest of the season!

Thank you for your comments. How is Hull these days ? ( I haven't been up to South Cave recently to see some relatives )
I too am happy after a win ( as YOU say, a slightly fortunate one ). Weston hasn't played as well as when he first joined the Gills. He should be about pace & trickery - but sadly his better days are some time ago. A sad fact of life is that, even for Gillingham, he is no longer good enough to deserve a new contract. ( even YOU admit that his trickery skills let him down - and I'm not particularly interested in seeing wingers 'just' running .)
YOU are entitled to think that it is unfair to criticise him for pulling out of a tackle. I am entitled to my contrary view - on the grounds that tackling is an integral part of football. ( I doubt that this expectation is 'nonsense' - but believe what you will ! ) In starting this thread, I NEVER said that Weston played badly - I concentrated on one aspect of his 'performance' - an aspect that, in my opinion, called into question his courage - a lack of which is worrying at any time - let alone if we are to struggle to avoid relegation. I will make no secret of the fact that I do not rate Weston highly enough for a new contract - as a person I have nothing bad to say about the man.
With respect to what form of courage that YOU find acceptable, I will NOT 'move on' with my more orthodox views. As for supporting the club - well with as much humility as I can muster, I would put myself in a group of about 1% (guessing) of fans that has spent much money on multiple season tickets, numerous other matchday tickets (at MY expense ) for guests AND following the team to ALL bar 3 away games in the last 4 seasons. Please forgive me for complaining about a 'meaningless incident ( YOUR suggestion ). Perhaps you might give your thoughts about the performance level during the second half against Stevenage. Where does it sit with your guage of meaningless ? - just how much 'meaningless' should be tolerated ? We won the game ( I am grateful ) - but NOT because of Weston - who chose one moment of cowardice to show just how 'much' he is willing to put on the line.
If Weston continues to be in the team I will support him as I do ALL the other players - but I know that I cannot rely on him to be as brave as I would like - so I just hope that he will not provide me with more opportunities for drivel.

bristol407 - in fairness to gfclukey I feel it necessary to respond to your post.

For too long Weston's performances have been [less than] a 'mixed bag'. In terms of his overall usefulness - I am not making any judgement based purely on one game - but I will harshly judge a players lack of courage - even if it was just this once. I believe that Crawley were far sharper at marking all over the pitch, than we were ( but thankfully not on Lee. )
You obviously are aware of the incident about which I refer. Weston didn't help himself when he pushed the ball a little too far forward - to NOW give the defender a sporting chance. I have seen enough football to recognise that Weston 'bottled' a physical confrontation - in what was, at worst a 50-50 situation.
Am I really asking too much for players to be as committed as Andy Hessenthaler, Paul Smith, Charlie Lee etc ? brb has accused me of being 'blunt' guilty as charged -but I am being honest with my emotions and thoughts - which have nothing to do with Myles Weston's life outside football.

always right- I fully appreciate your opinion and in all honesty I appreciate a lively debate over issues, yes I live in Hull do to university commitments and I cant make many home matches due to this but watch every single match on the monday night football on the gills player and at great expense to myself have been able to organise travel to the Bradford game and was planning to get to the Peterborough game before the postponement, without wishing for this to become a petty issue I try and go and see the team live at any possible opportunity and I personally don't think that the fact I cant get to every game alters the way I see the team. Thing is with westy is that he is a player who is rough around the edges as if he was solid in all areas he would be playing in a higher league it is almost as if we are buying into the idea of what he could be and what he is potentially able to do rather than what he is but we have seen that he can be sensational every now and then. I fully understand your views on what constitutes meaningless and it honestly made me ponder for a moment about our performance but I still stick to my guns about the Crawley game, ducking out of a challenge in meaningless in the context of the match and I did not mean to give the impression that I thought that avoiding a tackle though out the season was something to be encouraged.
Always Right- I may not agree with you or some other posters on this forum but we can all agree that we all want the best for the club and therefore lively debate between us all is something we can enjoy and personally I welcome any rebuttal from you and hope we can keep having a conversation about the team we all love.

I've been watching the Gills for a long time - even though a home match involves a 100 mile trip. This does NOT make me any more passionate than fans such as yourself -who are constrained by geography & economics.

I do meet up with fans (northern elite etc) who are surprised at some of the team & individual performances compared to the few minutes of highlights that they see on the television.

I have stated that Weston can be useful - but those occasions are too infrequent to deserve a new contract - but even the lack in ability of ANY of the Gillingham player does not particularly worry me. I am pragmatic enough to know that, (by & large) we will always only attract players of 'limited' ability all the time we have the current level of monetary resources. I am happy to watch my humble, (ex) home town team play in L2 / L1 (a bit higher maybe).

The issue with Weston on this occasion has NOTHING to do with his skill. He is no worse than several of the others in the squad. I am being deliberately blinkered when I say that I wanted to focus on his lack of courage - in THAT one incident. Perhaps I shouldn't delve into the psychology of a footballer - but my immediate thought was that he showed cowardice - as demonstrated by a fan very close to me who performed a 'chicken' impression.

I do not have high expectations of footballing ability of ANY of the Gillingham players. I keep saying that it is not losing that concerns me - but the lack of effort - however - in THAT one moment, Weston sank below 'not trying' by his display of cowardice in 'the cause'. Maybe my reaction could be considered a little harsh - especially by those who were unable to attend this game. Maybe, as brb says, I have been 'blunt' - but I have been honest - because I have seen enough of Gillingham's brand of meaningless performances to differentiate THAT one incident as worse.

I am more than happy that you hold a contrary view on some matters. I have spoken from my heart and have tried to uphold my principles of honesty & transparency - hopefully in a respectful manner -even if my thoughts are not shared.

I did start this thread by giving a public health warning - it was not intended as a 'wind-up'

Always Right - without this wishing to become a running issue I will simply agree to disagree with you on this matter, I understand to a fans point of view that ducking out of a challenge may be seen as cowardice but maybe he simply thought he was going to get injured by going into it and maybe it was worth living to fight another day as if he went through with it and hurt himself its likely that that would have been the end of the move anyway. Oh well onto coventry hopefully without any contentious issues!

To be honest guys I think its been an interesting thread and the 'It's a funny old game' by gioblues, that latter title probably sums everything up nicely for me. I just find it amazing and amusing how supporters see a sole game, differing opinions through many different eyes without action replay TV, that's good and what football is about for me. This has to probably be the most hotly disputed game of the season with a clear divide in opinion. Certainly made the board active over the weekend. Well done to everyone I say whatever side of the fence you sit for adding to the debate and may i say in a sensible manner. Thank You.

I just hope PT plays Weston against Coventry so we can all come back for round 2. I jest.
