Dave Whelan has urged Victor Moses to spend at least another year at Wigan Athletic after rejecting an offer from Chelsea for the winger.

Moses has just 12 months remaining on his current deal at the DW Stadium and has been the subject of a reported £4million bid from European champions Chelsea.
However, Whelan has accused the Blues of 'taking the Mickey' with their bid for Moses, who played a key role in Wigan's Premier League survival last season.

Whelan is in no mood to let the Nigeria international leave on the cheap and he believes the 21-year-old's career would be best served by staying with the Latics for the time being.

    Realistic

"Chelsea would need to get realistic before we would even listen to them. Victor Moses needs another year or two before moving to a club like Chelsea."

    Quotes of the week
"Chelsea would need to get realistic before we would even listen to them," the Wigan chairman told ESPN. "They made a bid at 6pm last night and we turned it down flat.

"Roberto Martinez has brought this player on and he needs at least another year with Roberto to become a top player.

"We have offered him a new contract but it seems the agent, more than the player, wants to move him on - at least that is the impression we are getting.

"It cannot be for the player's good. Victor Moses needs another year or two before moving to a club like Chelsea.

"He needs games and he won't be first choice at Chelsea, I wouldn't have thought.

"We don't need to sell him with 12 months to go on his contract because he is under 24 so wouldn't be going on a free transfer.

"Ideally we would like him to sign a new contract, or a club like Chelsea would have to be realistic.

"At the moment, they are taking the Mickey with the bid they've made."

And according to a few newspapers since then, that has went up to £10 Mil, not that bothered but I think would of been a good signing

Under 24?? I thought it was if the player came through the academy which he blatantly didn't?? Unless the rules have changed

Some individual leagues have restrictions to protect academies. For example, in the UK, players under 23 who are out of contract are only available on a free transfer if released by the club holding the players' licence.
