Many people said last year that if we got top 4 it would be Wenger's greatest achievement. I was one of them. Is he content to simply out do himself in this regard each year from now? In other words, having goven up on winning trophies, is he setting himself the challnge of achieving 4th place each year with progressivley meagre resources?
Even Wenger said its a good thing when simple Top 4 finishes are scrutinized, so I highly doubt he, or anyone else considers a Top 4 place his greatest achievement.
Not really. We spend way more on wages than Spurs we our resources are far greater, so we should always be finishing above them. Doing that, would probably mean we would finish in the top four. So, for me it would not Wenger's greatest achievement.
'Greatest' implies greatest ever. So that would have to be the double winning sides and the invincibles. Greatest achievement possible in current context means finishing in the top 4, that's the way it is at the moment. But that doesn't mean Wenger or any Arsenal fan is accepting that it is all we can ever achieve.
To me, top 4 is the basic standard, job done. It's why I am not that critical of Wenger. However as SJW10 points out 4th place is where we should be, if we drop below that, then the team is under-performing. Now I do think that Wenger has done well to rebuild these sides every time the team gets gutted of its star players. We see a lot of criticism about how he let these players leave (still not sure he can do much about it), but not that much for rebuilding sides year after year. I mean, Liverpool are (seemingly) given a pass by the press, because they are rebuilding, but they didn't lose as many players as we did last year.
