Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he will judge his success on the pitch before deciding whether to extend his contract when it expires at the end of the season.

He said: "We are in no hurry. We are in September and my contract finishes in June. There is a long way to go.

"There is no need to plan (any talks). I have said many times I want to do well with this club and in the end I will sit down and think 'how well have I done with the team I have had?'

"That has to be sufficient for me to decide yes or no.

"One of the main judgments you can have about a manager is how well he does with his team."

This is good from Wenger. He wants to do well and then decide if he's doing well enough to sign that contract. This shows we are moving in the right direction!

How is this a wum thread? Wenger stated himself that he won't sign a new contract until the end of the season and he can assess whether he's done well or not?

I think he'll stay so long as Arsenal fans still want him to. He's had plenty of chances to leave if he wanted to but he clearly has a lot of affection for the club and wants to bring back the kind of success he had earlier in his time at Arsenal. The mistake that's been made before is either him or the board talking about new contracts and his job being safe early on in a season, or when the fans aren't totally happy. That just seemed to rile you guys up in the past so this seems like the sensible way to answer the question.

The statement's right in any case as if he doesn't get you a trophy or some significant progress in the league this season then I doubt many would want him to stay and the pressure would grow for him to leave. A bit like AVB, there are no excuses for him not achieving something this season. AVB has been able able to rebuild the squad with the players he wants in his side and Wenger has very publicly been given the money to add the extra start quality that he's wanted. If AVB doesn't get us top 4(or a trophy) or Wenger doesn't get a trophy(or improvement in the league and CL) then what else can you do? If you give them another season then you might as well just give them another 10 seasons and hope at somepoint they get it right. Bottom line is they've both had an ideal chance to take their club forward.

I closed the thread yesterday as it was started by a Liverpool fan and I'm personally fed up with the Arsenal v Liverpool spats on this board.
You may have noticed post #8 on this thread <ok>
I have no problem with Arsenal fans discussing Arsene Wenger's future.

might wanna see a Dr about that stick up your arse fella, if I wanted to start a spat I could do a lot better than the rather mild... "better start looking for a new manager then"

    never mind eh

<ok> was just a gentle dig at the mods, as surprised the other thread was closed, as it was quite an interesting take to discuss. But, as Cym says, none of my business really.

I know. I already don't visit one board cause of the modding.

Was just expressing surprise above at the closing of the thread yesterday, but you've explained it now, so fine. If I recall you didn't explain it in the thread and it was strange to me. My comment wasn't intended to make any general point about modding on here, just at the one decision. Any issues I have I would take up with the person concerned.
