Good news in my opinion, I know some will disagree, but he is still one of the best Managers in Europe and most clubs would jump at the chance to have him manage their teams. Arsenal are lucky to have him and it will be an exciting few years ahead now that we look like we're able to compete for the better players again. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...rsenal-following-positive-contract-talks.html
What are you basing that on, paper rumors? Or did I miss you signing someone other than a young French unknown?
He doesn't deserve a new contract, at least wait until the end of the season to put some pressure on him ffs. Many people, included the staunchest Wenger supporters have admitted that this Summer could be a make or break one for him, yet he may still be rewarded with a contract extension if he doesn't deliver. It's ridiculous.
I think that this is a good idea. There are very few tried and tested managers knocking around as replacements. We don't want to be left in the lurch at the end of next year.
This is a fair point. It arguably shows that the board don't see this summer or the start of the season as a test that Arsene needs to pass, but then I think we all knew that Wenger is far more likely to walk on his own terms rather than be sacked. Newspaper comments sections are always failworthy, but this one did make me laugh:
This quote from Arsene is what has stuck out for me: "What I'll do in the future is not use my longevity at this club as an advantage to stay in this position if I don’t do well" Now if he believes what he is saying here, then surely he will wait until the end of the season and judge himself either worthy or not of a new contract. That may still happen, which I am all for. After all, these contract talks have been described as preliminary, maybe they will just agree a new contract in principle. I don't think if Wenger has a great season he will walk out next Summer to the highest bidder, he has said after all that his heart is with Arsenal.
I think it was a fair point until the "It is ridiculous". It isn't really. Although fans may think that managers will quit their jobs to come to Arsenal, there is no guarantee that any manager will be available if they let Wenger's contract run out. There is also no guarantee that Wenger will accept a deal if they let one expire. Given the relatively low cost of paying off a contract if they decide to replace him, this is just an insurance policy, to make sure that we are not left frantically looking round for a new manager at the end of next year, or that if PSG poach him we will not be left in the lurch. Offering a new contract to make sure we have the option of retaining him, is not saying that the board will not sack him if we get relegated next season.
We simply can't comment on the supposed 'shift' in transfer policy at the moment. If we get the right players in then there's no-one else I'd rather have at the helm. The other managers in the top four are all new appointments (although Mourinho has been there before) and this season appears to be a great opportunity for the team to compete. If our squad is sufficient in August then this is good news; stability is always good for the club and the players. If we have a disappointing summer then this decision will seem to signal four more years of uncompetitive squads and disrespect to the supporters. It all really depends on transfers. Come on Arsene: make being an Arsenal supporter exciting again!!!!!!
Personally I want to see how Wenger will do with a decent budget this Summer. I think the Club should wait until Christmas before offering out a new contract.
Surely this assumes Wenger has total control over who signs for us or not and as such is unfair. I would rather wait until we get a couple of new marque players in before judging him.
Better to sign him up now than risk rushing it and panicking when his current deal is almost up. Isn't that what people have been calling for us to do with our players ?
"an exciting few years ahead . " With Arsene Wenger ? the most exciting thing he did last season was make a substitution in the 60th minute , breaking a lifelong habit . zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz forgive me if i dont cheer with glee at his contract renewal . edit , sorry , the most exciting thing about Arsene Wenger last season was the zipper on his coat ...but ho hum . He cant last forever .
I'm surprised by the negativity from these rumours, I can only assume people are basing their views on the fact we haven't made any significant signings so far ? Perhaps a reminder that the transfer window is only 14 days old ? Last 2 seasons we've been ****ed by wantaway stars, AW has had to deal with losing these key players and whilst he has made some poor signings (I believe we've terminated 19 contracts this Summer inc academy which shows the extent of the poor decisions) he has made some good signings and made CL qualification every year. The form we hit in the last third of last season was exceptional, title winning form, and the **** we found ourselves in was possibly due to familiarisation issues for new players as much as anything, but when AW got ruthless with TV and Ches it turned things around. I also believe the financial restrictions enforced by the board were real, to have players like Nasri, RVP and Ade want to move on I don't believe were solely for money, I do think there were frustrations at the lack of quality the club were bringing in. I'm not 100% behind our manager, I can see the mistakes he's made in recent seasons, but I do believe he's the best man for the club and I do believe he will bring in some quality this Summer that will strengthen our team significantly, that said failure to secure some proper quality in the coming weeks given our well publicised wealth and I would struggle....
