Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has had a bargain-basement bid for Gary Cahill laughed out of town by Bolton.

Wenger has tabled an offer of just £6million, plus extras, for the England international, which is roughly a THIRD of Bolton's valuation on their classy centre-half.

The offer is so low that the Lancashire side have dismissed it out of hand.

Arsenal have turned their attention to Cahill after failing with a £12m offer for Everton's Phil Jagielka, and stepping back from Blackburn skipper Chris Samba because of his price-tag.

Their move for Cahill is bizarre, however, as boss Owen Coyle has made no secret of his willingness to sell - at a fair price.

Bolton insiders claim the Arsenal bid is 'taking the mickey.'

Cahill is in the last year of his deal and is eager to join an elite club, but Bolton will not accept a low offer or any effort to destabilise their star man.

Wanderers paid £5m for Cahill and now value him at £17m.

Bolton are happy to keep the player and either convince him to sign a new contract or possibly sell in January when he will still be an asset because he will be eligible for the Champions League.

Everton are also standing strong on Jagielka.

Boss David Moyes is willing to sell other players to fill the £10m 'hole' at the bank and is against trading his England defender.

What a joke. Think wenger is just putting bids in to make himself look like he's busy and then will use the ' i tried ' routine.

And people wonder why many Arsenal fans have gone off Wenger ! This level of idiocy is really jarring me - if of course that report is true.

The trouble is Wenger wants it known that we made a bid, but its so low they will refuse. He can then say 'we tried to sign players'.

I don't believe this, I won't believe this. I can't belive this. Surely we haven't stooped this low, if we have we're just embarrasing ourselves now.

If we have to pay £16m and not £6m - then bloody pay it Wenger.

You have to start somewhere, get the player wanting the switch and with only a year left on his contract!

Then put in another bid around 12m and I think we could sign him, it's what clubs have done to us in the past!

But yes Wenger is very frustrating in his transfer policy!

Daily Mirror - the bastion of high standards of journalistic integrity.......... Let's face it - when it comes to the press, we all believe what we want to believe and they thrive on that. The amount of unsubstantiated poo that has been written about Arsenal and Wenger in the press and on these boards is staggering. I understand that it helps to sell papers - I just don't get the constant willingness of some so called fans to keep jumping on to the negative bandwagons and perpetuate the anti-Wenger stories. He isn't going anywhere and he isn't going to change his style because of what is written about him.

  8. Is it Arsene Wenger or that man who hides behind the scenes, Ivan Gazidis? One might say that they do discuss their strategy of course but who is it who takes the final decision?

Whoever it is, silly bids like these will just heap ridicule on us and wastes everyone's time for nothing. If this is the ploy to leave everything late and try to snap up a bargain because a player has one more year left on his contract to run, then it is pretty damn stupid since everyone knows by now how much money you have to spend.....

Exactly my thoughts. Nowhere in that article is there proof or even quotes from someone official. Absolute bollocks story and yet people get sucked in again.

I saw this and immediately thought the story was not true. Of course I do not know, but why do people think it is. As Jensen said no quotes from anyone save of course for the famous 'insiders'.

Coyle has announced that it is true. Crikey, what is going on with Wenger right now.

If this is true i expect the reason for the low bid is that Cahill is in the last year of his contract. We may go in for him again at a slightly higher bid (£10-12 million probably), or wait until January and get him then.

Wenger will NOT be forced to pay the £17 million they are after and even if it means we hold on until January he will get a discount price if he signs Cahill.

I note the figure we actually bid is still 'alleged' though. Naturally this means all we offered was a bag of crisps and a curly wurly.

I don't rate Cahill at all, and I hope Wenger goes for someone else. 18m is excessive. Half that amount would be reasonable valuation for a player in the last year of his contract.

If the 7 million bid is true, then whoever at Arsenal is responsible for it is a ****. It's an insult to Bolton. For Christ sakes just put in a realistic bid.

I agree Verm and Kosc are both better players and Cahill would be a back-up.

I'd be happy if we paid anything up to around £10 million, but over that it's an overpriced transfer.

Hi Guys, just moved across been off the scene since 606 closed...
Just in response, surely Kos is not better than Cahill? No chance. I think we should be putting in a bid here of 12m and getting him in, that should do it I reckon. it's insulting that we offered 6m to be fair to Bolton. We get 24m for Nasri and expect to pinch other teams best players for peanuts, it's getting depressing shopping around like tramps with no money.

Id pay 17m if it meant never having to see Squaky falling about the pitch again this season like the half baked shambles he performed last year.

Coyle is quoted on the BBC as saying a less than derisory offer has been made so maybe now some of you deniers can come up with an explanation as to why we are doing this.

We did it with Jagielka, we didn't want to pay the £17m for Mata when it was only £17m, but we are happy to pay £12m for a Div 1 Oxo cube ! WTF.
