While Man United has been buying mainly british players, Wenger seems to prefer continental non-UK players in his "buying spree". While foreign players may have more ability for the same money (even that assumption is doubtful), the british players may have more "guts" for a tough match in the premiership. Players like Adams, Keown, Dixon, Campbell, Seaman were good examples of what you can get. Wenger's prejudice may come back to haunt him. He should go for the likes of Cahill or Jagielka even though they may cost a couple of millions pounds more.
Well for national stereotypes Germans have a rutheless focus and determination and strength which would be great in defence Brazil have flair, ability and amazing footballing skills with the ball, so an attacking fullback wouldn't be too bad Koreans are super hard working focused never give up with intelligence and ability
Everton want £20 Million for Jagielka. A 29 year old who has a few caps for England and has never played in the CL. Bolton have a chairman who retweets a tweet that calls Wenger a bellend. Cahill is a CB who also have zero CL experience and is on the last year of his contract. If they want to sit down and talk like pro's then that deal could be back on.
Well said Friend and while Arsene doesn't quite have the budget for some of the asking prices of British players, you have to give him credit for some of the young Brits he does have in the squad though, young Jack, Aaron, Theo, Frimpers, Craig E, Henri L and Kieran G. You'll also find quite a few Brits in the Reserve squad.
That's all well and good but as an outsider looking in it seems that your side is screaming out for experienced pros at this level to make a spine of the team. Cahill is a really good centre-half who can play it out of defence in the Arsenal way too and would do well with Vermaelen. Leighton Baines is another who is in his prime and at a club who aren't in a position to turn down a good offer. In the midfield is where the experience is most key- I think you could do a lot worse than Owen Hargreaves on a pay-as-you-play although it seems Parker would be perfect for a couple of years.
With respect my friend but I thought the OP began accusing Arsene Wenger of not buying British. Super Jack responded with his opinion on the financial aspects of looking to acquire some of the players we need while I added that Arsene not only buys but also ' grows ' British players. While it is true that there are key positions to be filled and British players may well be suited to our needs, so indeed are other players and any manager would be wise to consider them too and with the reasons Super Jack gave above, taking a wide view seems a sensible approach. Not dissing the likes of Cahill, Jagielka and Samba of course. Keep enjoying the beautiful game.
I think next year when you have finished paying for your litle stadium you will be in the market for big signings again. You havent signed big, because you simply cannot afford it
We CAN afford it - Wenger wants to keep the money. He has an economics degree, but mostly can't see the big picture - as is the way with finance people..
Phil Jagielka = 29 years old. Never player i champions league. A few caps for a poor footballing nation (england). And valued at £20m Andy Carroll = terrible, championship standard donkey = £35m. Invincibles = based around foreign players almost entirely. I hope wenger doesnt buy british.
And with respect to you, my friend, my point was that buying british players you know what you're getting. Mertesacker, the new left-back etc may be more talented players for less or equal money but there's a huge risk of it not working when finishing 4th is of such importance. Buying three brits (or foreigners with plenty of prem experience e.g. Samba) might be an extra £20m but for your particular goals as a team it's a price worth paying, imo. I'm no Arsenal lover or hater but a failure to finish in the top 4 this season at a time when United, City, Chelsea and Liverpool are all investing heavily and looking far stronger than yourselves could be disastrous and there's a real possibility those 4 will cement themselves as the new 'big 4' and pull away for many years with Arsenal, Spurs and the rest scrapping for the Europa League.
You really think buying andy carroll, stuart downing and jordan henderson for a combined £70m is good business? Fair play if so. But I am glad arsene wenger is our manager.
Didn't Wenger buy Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Carl Jenkinson this window? Admittedly Jenkinson is half Finnish but he was born in the UK and trained in the UK. So I dont think you can really get away with saying he doesn't buy British. Certainly he doesn't buy established top league British footballers but that may be as much down to the inflated prices for them as much as his preferance of bringing players through the system.
I thought Wenger bought half-finish young players so he can control the final stages of their development.
the reason wenger doesn't buy established english players is because they can't play the kind of football we want 99% of english players are about hoofing it long not short controlled passing, dribbling, moving
Wenger wants possession, possession, possession - but forgets to put it in the net, while they do at our end.
and you are saying it after Arsene splashed 15 ml on Oxfam-Chamberlain? There will be Walcott, Wilshere, Gibbs, AOC, Frimpong and Ramsey in our starting XI soon. That is more than half.
