Welcome one and all to the Not606 Swansea City forum. This thread gives basic rules for our forum, a brief history of our club for those interested, and a how to find us guide with places to eat and drink for away fans. Rules: A few basic rules for this forum (What you post elsewhere is of no importance). 1. No personal abuse. Any posts aimed specifically at another poster, with the intention of abusing them, will be deleted straight away. Grow up, the lot of you. 2. No multiple threads. If there is a thread on a subject already, post in there unless you are creating a thread with a completely different angle to those that exist already. Threads where different ideas are discussed are brilliant, but threads which are essentially, copies of other threads will be removed as there's no point in clogging up the board. Hints and tips: Swearing is permitted. For those that don’t wish to see swearing, please switch on the swear filter which is located at the bottom of the forum. This is a public forum. Not everyone wants to talk football 24/7 so there is likely to be Off Topic threads. To keep people happy, maybe consider placing OT in your title thread so people that wish to discuss football only, know to skip past it. Not safe for work. Please, if a post or image is not safe for work, say so. Unlike swearing, this cannot be filtered and could land someone in hot water. Our first professional match came against now fierce rivals, Cardiff City. The result, 1-1. The first team to visit the Vetch Field were then English champions, Blackburn Rovers. The result, a 1-0 win for the Swans We reached the semi finals of the FA cup in 1965, beating the likes of Stoke City and Liverpool in the process before bowing out to Preston North End. We changed our name in 1969 to Swansea City, due to Swansea itself being granted a City status. In 1981, we gained promotion to the top league for the first time in our history. We were also only the second club to ever get 4 back to back promotions, a record shared with Wimbledon FC. We moved to the Liberty Stadium in 2005. We gained promotion to the Premier League on May 30th 2011, winning the play off final 4-2 against Reading. A few more facts and figures can be found here :- http://www.scfc.co.uk/facts.html Why are we called Swansea “Jacks”? A question we are often asked but nobody knows the exact answer. One explanation for this name is that during the 17th century, sailors from Swansea were respected and any 'Swansea Jack' was allowed to join the crew based simply on the town's reputation for good sailors. Another theory is Swansea Jack was a black retriever with a longish coat. He was similar in appearance to a modern Flat-Coated Retriever, but was instead identified at the time as a Newfoundland dog, despite being considerably smaller and lighter in build than the typical modern Newfoundland dog, possibly because he was reported to have been born in Newfoundland. He lived in the North Dock / River Tawe area of Swansea with his master, William Thomas. Jack would always respond to cries for help from the water, diving into the water and pulling whoever was in difficulty to safety at the dockside. His first rescue, in June 1931, when he saved a 12-year-old boy, went unreported. A few weeks later, this time in front of a crowd, Jack rescued a swimmer from the docks. His photograph appeared in the local paper and the local council awarded him a silver collar. In 1936, he had the prestigious 'Bravest Dog of the Year' award bestowed upon him by the London Star newspaper. He received a silver cup from the Lord Mayor of London and he is still the only dog to have been awarded two bronze medals ('the canine V.C.') by the National Canine Defence League (now known as Dogs Trust). Legend has it that in his lifetime he saved 27 people from the Docks / River Tawe. Swansea Jack died in October 1937 after eating rat poison. His burial monument, paid for by public subscription, is located on the Promenade in Swansea near St. Helen's Rugby Ground. In 2000, Swansea Jack was named 'Dog of the Century' by NewFound Friends of Bristol who train domestic dogs in aquatic rescue techniques. How to find us: The Liberty Stadium, Morfa, Swansea, SA1 2FA. Leave the M4 at Junction 45 and take the A4067 towards the City Centre (sign posted A4067 South). Stay on the A4067 for around two and half miles and you will reach the stadium on your left. Car parking at the stadium is for permit holders only and most of the immediate residential areas around the stadium now have 'residents only' parking schemes in place. However away mini buses and coaches can park behind the North Stand in a fenced compound, at a cost of £20 per coach and £10 per minibus. There is also numerous “manned” car parks that charge £5 per vehicle. These are dotted around the stadium and are sign posted. Don't be tempted to park on the nearby Retail Park as you may well end up with a ticket, or worse still, clamped for your trouble! Food and drinks for away fans: There are a few fast food outlets and sit down restaurants within minutes of the stadium. There is also a nearby Morrisons. If it’s drinks your after, there is a Harvester and a Franky and Benny’s outside the stadium. Don’t be too intimidated, were not a bad bunch. For a virtual drink, do visit the Swansea Jack Inn. http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/140495-The-Swansea-Jack-Inn?p=2709649#post2709649
