The defender completed his £2.5m move from Groningen on Friday afternoon and was introduced to the media with his first name on the back of his shirt and a number five. Away from the cameras it quickly became clear who wears the trousers in the relationship when rike88 grabbed Virgil’s shirt and posted the picture on her twitter account. That picture proved to be an open invite to Kris Commons other half, Lisa Hague, who promptly welcomed rike88 to the hoops with a message saying: “hello, I’m Lisa a players wife from Celtic, welcome to the best team in the world, look forward to meeting you at the first game! Rike88 replied with: “Hi Lisa! Thnx for your message! We’ll see each other soon! X” As with most recent events twitter was the place to be to keep upto date with the transfer. From his holiday in the Algarve Neil Lennon welcomed his new signing with: “Delighted that we have acquired Virgil van Dijk..a highly talented young player.” Former Celtic striker Pierre van Hooijdonk added: “#Celtic does a great job signing Virgil van Dijk. Strong centre-half who is comfortable with ball at his feet.Worth a lot in couple of years.” The player himself handled his arrival expertly and is clearly looking forward to hitting the ground running with Celtic’s entire focus on the Champions League. Virgil said: “I’m very confident the club will make it through to the group stages. “I’m very excited. It will be great to see which opponent we get. I hope something great can happen again this season. I’ve had a good rest. I’ve been on vacation for 12 days and I can’t wait to start training. “The biggest challenge for me is that everything is new for me after living my whole life in Holland. It is a big step for me. “I don’t know much about the players but I spoke to a couple of them on Thursday and they gave me a warm welcome. “Everyone knows about the fans and I can’t wait to play in front of them. I believe I can bring something extra to the team, so we’ll see how it goes.” A special message for those ****s at the SFA please log in to view this image
His name means Virgil Of The Dyke. Does this mean he's the boy who's had his finger in one for all these years?
I think he does actually have a point. I can't see why Celtic should be able to reschedule a game just to play a meaningless friendly, if it was St Mirren who did it I would be outraged. If it's a game which has to be played it should be played before the SPL season begins, not a week into it. Ridiculous decision by Celtic.
We play in a league with no revenue , the rules were put in place by the spl , Hibs took a week out last season , Old Rangers took a week out to play Chelsea , Celtic are playing by the rules , what is the problem trying to make our club a few bob ????
I'm very frustrated. I don't agree with it. It doesn't happen anywhere else in the world. I can't see why it happens here. The premiership kicks off late to allow man u etc to travel the globe playing friendlies. Its a fair compromise between a long summer for the wee clubs and the big clubs being allowed to play these friendlies.
I don't think that's quite the point Harry. He wasn't saying that Celtic were breaking any rules or that he was against us making money from friendlies etc - it seems to me that he was just expressing his frustration at the breaking up of the momentum of the league campaign by such friendlies being allowed to take place and I presume he would say the same thing no matter what club was involved?
The problem is, Celtic need to look at all avenues to increase revenue as SPL doesn't make money. However, Scottish football needs to start earlier each season as our euro ranking is rank...meaning Scottish teams have several qualification rounds. Pre-season fitness is not like match fitness. So you have the issue of fitness, match fitness and revenue... So, I cant complain about Celtic taking the option (open to all SPL clubs) to generate some extra revenue.
I understand his frustrations but we are always going to try and boost our income and profile and we should be allowed to do that.
The only loser are the poor season ticket holders that can make a Saturday 3o'clock kick off but can't make the rearranged midweek game
So it doesn't affect the 99% of yahoos that don't go to games on here then harry? That'll be why webel et al are fully in support then.
Who the **** are St Mirren going to be able to get a game against at this notice that close to the English season starting? The only friendly they'll get will be against Neilston or Johnstone Burgh or one of the other Renfrewshire Cup also-rans. I think he has a point but get it up him anyway <mischief> As for Virgil's missus, I'm gonna jump straight in and say ah wid on the basis of her hair and general silhouette alone
I went to a Derry City Vs St Mirren glamour friendly. The St Mirren fan was a good guy. I'll not take advice on how to support my club from someone who changes allegiances to a new club the second his old club ceases to operate.
