A lot of talk in the press about Rooney needing to leave United to make the most of his career.

But what about Welbeck. Great for England but slated by United 'fans'.

Is he another Englishman who needs to leave United to improve his game before it is too late.

Otherwise he could go the way of Richardson, Butt, etc and other talents who failed to make it at Old Trafford

I'd argue Butt probably maximised his fairly limited ability by playing with superior players and was good back-up. Had he played for a mid-table side he would have had more responsibility and may have been a bit found out.

As for Welbeck, he's not good enough to start up front for a top side, particularly with the modern penchant for one up front. He's a useful squad player for his athleticism for England and United but probably shouldn't start for either at full strength. Useful to have squad players who can do a job in various positions- every team needs them. Would he be a better player if he went to, say, Everton? Probably not imo.

Butt was very good for England in the holding role I thought.

Welbeck would come on for escaping the United subs bench, a move to Everton or somewhere like would allow him to fulfill the potential he has shown but not always maintained.

Really? 307 appearance in total and 26 goals. 6 League titles, 3 FA cup winner medals and 1 Champions League winners medal. Not how I'd imagine a failure's career would look like. That being said considering you are obsessed with Utd and know everything maybe you're on to something. <whistle>

Not much talent behind Welbeck. Sturridge is a class above him.

Will be interesting to see what happens to him now that Fergie is no longer in charge.
Fergie was always great at utilising otherwise average squad players and getting the best out of them (Phil Neville, Butt, The Twins, Cleverley, Welbeck).
On the face of it, he seems Moyes' type of player, but with Rooney and RVP in the squad, he will not get enough games to fill his potential imo.

Haven't heard many genuine Utd fans slating Welbeck, most of us are happy to have a third or fourth choice striker who is better than many of our rivals second choices.

It is a good point about England players often being first choice for England whilst squad players for Utd - Butt, Phil Neville, Welbeck, even Cleverley. Definitely an interesting comparison to other players like Carragher, Fowler, Le Saux and now Sturridge and Cahill who were first choice for their clubs but not good enough for England.

Will be interesting to see if it was just down to SAF's management and coaching quality, or if it will continue under Moyes.

You're welcome to give us £25m for Welbeck. I'm sure he's much more for sale than Rooney <ok>

United fans on 606 were coating Danny until the Real game, when he was one of the few United boys not overwhelmed by the occasion at the Bernabeu where 5-1 would have been a fair reflection of play

Personally I wouldn't want either, Welbeck does clearly have potential but is somewhat lightweight in strength and tenacity. Rooney is great for ten or so games a year struggles with training doesn't hold condition well, smokes & drinks and takes saga holidays <whistle>
He's so wrong for us in so many ways.

It's hard to trust a supposed £30 million player who wears his wife's minge on his head. <ok>

Apparently he got done for possession of coke at glastonbury but United hushed it up.

It is evident that Moyes cannot control his players or command his respect like they did Saffa.

The drinking schools etc will start up again at old t. All the big players turned the United job down for a reason and now we know why

Sir David "the chosen one" started on July 1st

Glastonbury was in June, so how can he control his players when he is not the manager?

    Please answer

Isn't this the same Nicky Butt that Pele said was by far England's best player at the 2002 World Cup?
