Chester is a fantastic day out and you get a great view of the action as the track is so small and round.

As a result of a tight, oval track (a horse is constantly turning until the short home straight) there is a draw bias in the 5f races whereby those drawn near the rail (low numbers) can get a good lead of they bounce out of the stalls and take some catching. However. That doesn't mean stall 1 always wins or any big stat like that, but you can begin to fathom how much harder it gets to get position from a wide draw (being stuck out wide means a horse has to travel further on this track because it's constantly turning).

Enjoy the day- everyone will post up their tips tonight and tomorrow morning. I always enjoy the Chester Cup- LE MAITRE CHAT being a tentative selection at this stage if Fran Norton can bounce out from stall 7. Might be tempted to back one more but il assess tonight.

I'll be there on Thursday, Lamby, cannot wait.

TC has given you good advice, I reckon.
Have a read of this :
    http://www.attheraces.com/news/latest-news/roger-varian-marvels-at-steve-rogers-chester-cup-claims
    for Chester Cup info too.

I like Somehow in the 2.40 ( O'Brien has a cracking recent strike rate in this race ) and Roudee in the 3.45 ( won on the Friday in this meeting last year after unseating the jockey and running half the course prior to going in the stalls ) with Soldier in Action rounding off the day.
My recent inability to find a winner should probably sound caution at these picks, though.

Have a great day - for once at the May Festival, it looks like being good weather.

It is a difficult track for punters as you can do your home work and come to the right conclusion and be thwarted by bad luck or Jamie Spencer.

On that subject Spencer loves to give up a draw advantage to sit in his favoured place at the back - however drawn 4 in the Chester cup..... he wouldn't, would he? If he does you will hear Barney swearing from Lambourn as he is riding a Henderson horse. I think the horse has a chance but wont be backing it as the jockey club rejected my suggestion at the beginning of the season that Jamie should be allocated a 10lb allowance to make up for his lack of tactical awareness.

A huge leap of faith required to support this horse but Ballista could be massively over priced at 50/1 in the 4:20 at Chester. Ew for me and lets hope that it stays at 3 places

As important as the draw is the ability to handle the track and also to race handily to the pace. No use drawing box one if you are a slow starter!

The first three jollies will win tomorrow but an outsider I am compelled to throw a dart at is MASAMAH at 40/1 in the 3.45. Has an awful draw and on a long losing run but the handicapper has thrown him a real lifeline and he is a front runner who loves the track. I can see the old boy pinging out and being pretty tough to get by!

    Chester
2.10 Patrouellie De Nuit 50-1 EW

Providing the eight intended runners stand their ground this is a reasonable bet in my book as it will blaze from the one stall and will have come on for the run at Wolverhampton. It should of course not win but at 50's ew it may not find 3 horses to catch it from the one stall. On it's first run it was outclassed by one of the best two year olds seen so far in Sutter County but what the horse did show is that it knows how to race as was up there until the last furlong. There will be worse bets this week.

I've backed Silver Concorde in the Chester Cup. Dermot Weld doesn't have many runners at Chester and the winner of 2014 Cheltenham Festival bumper has a good chance of winning provided he has luck in running! (drawn in stall 9 so a good draw)

    Happy Birthday Ste! <ok>

Like with LM have backed Silver Concorde solid Ew shot at 8/1. Altho the Fav is still on the up and is the only one really in the field who could emulate Trip to Paris and this apparently according to Roger Varian has been the plan for sometime i think Silver Concorde is a talented horse just look at his Cheltenham Bumper form, Dermot Weld is a master and the horse is carrying a pretty good weight on his back too

    15:10 Chester - Steve Rogers

(Probable favourite, very well drawn, can race up with the pace, good first run of the season, good trainer and jockey, and should stay the trip OK. That'll do! :emoticon-0100-smile).

Happy birthday, Ste, have a good'un!
