Morning, troops. Good to see COSMEAPOLITAN (12.20 Newbury) making his bow over the sticks this afternoon across the county line in Royal Berkshire. Let’s hope he can make a big impression both today and for the rest of the term – especially in the ‘Triumph’ in March, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more…

Those bookie chappies though are taking no chances with the 'Wiltshire wonder' (Cosmeapolitan not me) and currently make him an odds-on shot. But to be perfectly frank it’s not the strongest 3YO Hurdle Newbury has ever seen and some of his rivals already, even at this stage, look rather exposed. As big things are expected from the ‘county set’ one would therefore expect to see him open up with a victory. The only concern (or perhaps ‘unknown’ is a better word) is the Charlie Mann animal, Fixed Rate. He too makes his hurdling bow, pilgrims, and did run at Listed level on the Flat in France. I guess you could say, right now, he could be anything.

    Good luck, team.

Connections must be pleased to see My Tent remain on 155 after his run at the weekend. Great bit of placing there. Earn £28k and have no ratings increase at all. Surely he’ll be ‘Betfair Hurdle’ bound now…

In contrast the handicapper seems to have taken My Tent’s 155 rating literally and upped his Saturday conqueror, The New One, to a joint career high of 167 (won by 3.5 lengths when giving 8 lbs)! A bit academic (as he’ll never run in a handicap off that) but it seems a bit dappy to say that The New One has never been better than he is right now.

Problem I have with MTOY Barney is that he found zero off the bridle again. He will have to win on the bridle won't he? To do that off 155 and a heavy weight would still be a great performance.

Yep, agree. But you do have to wonder if the gun has truly been held to his head yet this term and that he’s at his peak right now. I know we aren’t supposed to entertain such ideas but to me he only ran previously at Haydock in order to secure a ratings reduction (and he got an 8 lbs one). My Tent won the Betfair in ’13 off 149 and will (if he goes to Newbury off his current figure) only be 6 lbs higher in the perchings this time around. That’s quite eyecatching.

Incidentally, do you know that Barry Geraghty is 0/6 on the horse?!? Is there a bit of a ‘problem’ there?!? That’s not a flippant question by the way. For other pilots the horse is 8/13.

You could say that for most of JPs horses since the great man retired. Old Barry G is a very different jockey and he does often save a horse if he thinks it's beaten.

I was really suprised to see TNO given an easy lead, everyone knows he is a tough horse and on his day he is very tough to get past. The market spoke on Saturday which was interesting too. Perhaps MTOY is on the way down rather than being plotted up? We shall see.

Regardless of his mark if MTOY is in the Betfair Hurdle he will be a false price and will only be in there to "fill a spot" and keep the weights down for a far more likelier JP type. The one yesterday for instance!

No way is The New One at the top of his game so the handicappers literal thinking of the form value is somewhat askew in my opinion.

Afternoon all, hope we are all well?

Day off work today as I have managed to put another year on the old body clock (still younger than stick though <laugh>)

First bet of the day Aurillac in the 1.30 - with Jonathan Moore's 3lbs he has effectively a 10lbs pull with Beware The Bear on their Ascot running, form which has been franked by Singlefarmpayment
