Catterick 210 freedom flyer looks the clear fav but the 9s on offer for Mrs Barclay s runner Captain Corcoran and 4 places looks very tempting . The booking of Harry Russell swings it . 365 have C/C at 6s which in my opinion is still to high
1 win in 7 at Catterick, so not his favourite track uncle. But he was only 3¼l behind the fav lto, having jumped awkwardly from the stalls and plenty to do 1f out, and has a pull of 5lb. The winner did win comfortably though so difficult to assess what might have been. I think his best chance is to jump smartly and make all. He did that at Southwell and won in a good time
Def not his fav track Ron and it was a poor effort lto after a 110 day break (so should be fresher for that and there was some promise in that run). Personally i can not see the fav running after last nights race at Wolverhampton the three and a half hour drive definatly would not be to there advantage . So out of the field the one that looks best suited to track and conditions in my opinion is C/C , as you mentioned the this have a quick look at C/D on soft ground generally in the top 3 , so 4 places and 9s looks good value at this awkward track. Harry Russell looks a good move as he is 3/8 in the last 14 days so inform . Only time will tell though .
France 3.27-Matilde Each Way @ 14-1 [Bet 365] Worth chancing at these odds if forgiving last poor run
Only just looked-in, so forgive the hindsight-looking comment. Those drawn 'high' were definitely at an advantage as first three home had high draws. CC was probably at a disadvantage with his Stall-4 draw? The jockey did bring him right over to the stands-side but I guess the effort was just too much for the horse? You just can't beat hindsight!
If it had been fast ground I would have definitely gone for Isle of Dreams based on his fast times on that surface lately. But not on Soft; never ran on it before and his only run on GS he was well beaten with just 8st 2lb on his back. How does that work?
Good article here on draw bias (and other factors) for Catterick. In short, it appears those drawn low have a distinct draw advantage when the ground is fast but, when it is soft, the ground on the inner is slower, giving the highly drawn horse an advantage
I think the ground is very important as some horses fair significantly better or worse on fast/soft ground. It is knowing to what extent the ground affects the performance which is not always easy to ascertain. In the Catterick race the outside was riding faster than the inside which clearly made some difference
Sorry I was meaning his form prior to the run on gd-sft masks his liking for the ground. He was a very lightly raced horse then who wasn’t really going anywhere, so to use that effort to say he does or doesn’t like the ground is awkward. Similarly does today say he likes the ground or that he’s in such good form that he won despite it? You know I think the ground is one of the most important things, but it’s not fraught with danger when looking at horses who have limited evidence.
I agree totally. The point I was making for not backing the winner was more that he had shown good form recently on fast ground (ie good times) but there was no evidence of him "enjoying" soft ground. That was enough to put me off. It looked more like a donkey race anyway and anything can happen, and does PS I think you meant "is"
