Anyone see "The Big Match Revisited" on ITV 4 this morning?

It was showing a game from 1979 between Bristol City and Everton in which we lost 4-1.

As someone in their mid 20's it was interesting to see what the players of my dads generation and put faces to the names some of our more "seasoned" followers on here talk about.

Clive Whitehead looked decent to me. Couple of cheeky back heels as well!

At one point (not sure if this was intentional) Sweeney was tackled by an Everton player called Todd and the commentator said "Sweeney.... Todd".

If you thought that was OK it may be worth your while trying to get hold of the DVD of the Arsenal/City game in August 1976. An official club DVD of the The Big Match highlights was produced in 2006 but it doesn't seem to be available any more. Now that game is worth watching!!

How does Paul Cheesley jump so high? He is always 6 inches above the defenders. He must have real springs in those heels.
I still have the cuttings from the papers the following day.

Over the years there were a few players who seemed to be able to get high and stay there a bit longer than others Alan Gilzean and Dennis Law spring to mind(excuse pun) Paul Cheesley was another in that mold and I think we never managed to replace him.

Sorry to correct you, but it wasn't 'you', it was another club called Bristol City that existed prior to 1982. I hope that clears it up for you <ok>

I beg to differ, Bigjohn - we actually beat Everton, rather than being thrashed by them!

They might have done in the early 50's as I think Everton spent a couple of seasons in Div 2 about the time Rovers had a spell there in what to them was a rarefied atmosphere. Think I'm right in saying the nearest the Gas ever got to the top flight was 6th in the second tier

Do bristol rovers still exist? Well f*** me....

Seems 50% of their remaining fanbase come on here.

Love how they are living off a flukey victory over everton reserves in a competition NO ONE cares about, over 10 years ago... Little victories eh boys. Worse than Mickey Quinn claiming Liverpool are still the greatest British team of all time because of what they did over 30 years ago. Bless

I saw the Gas play Everton at Eastville, probably 1953 or 4.
Everton had, I think, one season down in Div 2. They had a centre forward called Dave Hickson, later of Liverpool, who was a real physical handfull but Rovers had a brick ****house called Paddy Hale at centre half so a lot of blood and thunder

From memory, I was intererested in Everton at one time as I went for a trial there, they spent 3 seasons in Div 2 that time and one seasons in the late 20's/early 30's Relegated one year Promoted as champions the next, which I think is a record time period in the top flight. so about 53/54 would be about right think they were promoted in 53/54 back to the top flight. And the Gas were promoted to Div 2 52/53 or there abouts.

I also remember we lost there 1-0 in the old 1st Division, (maybe our first or second season) if my memory serves, Andy King scored the goal
