We want to be challenge for the title, says Bristol City goalscorer Aden Flint..

BRISTOL City are one win away from making their best start to a league campaign since three points for a win was first introduced in the 1981-82 season.

Saturday's 2-0 home win over Sc**thorpe United saw the Robins go second in the League One table behind Peterborough, with an impressive points tally of 14 from their opening six games.

Gary Johnson's newly-promoted side emulated that achievement at the beginning of the 2007-08 season, their first in the Championship.

But Steve Cotterill's class of 2014 will go one better if City can defeat Doncaster Rovers at Ashton Gate next Saturday and make it 17 points from seven games, two more than Johnson's side managed six years ago.

Second-half goals from Aden Flint and substitute Greg Cunningham saw the Robins extend their unbeaten start to six games and expectant supporters are already allowing themselves to dream of a possible promotion campaign.

Although Cotterill is rightly refusing to become carried away at this early stage, giant centre-back Flint is prepared to talk up City's promotion credentials.

Now up to second place in the League One table, City are just one point behind Peterborough and playing with growing confidence.

Flint scored his first goal at Ashton Gate to put City on course for their fourth victory of the season, and then said: "We are in the top two in the table and that is where we want to stay.

"I don't think we can be talking about that (promotion) yet, but we are second and we don't want to drop. We want to be challenging for the title this season and there is no point in hiding away from that.

"We have made a good start to the season, we are playing with a lot of confidence, there is a great spirit in the camp and we just want to keep playing and winning.

"Of course, we will keep our feet on the ground, but now we are up there challenging, we want to stay there if we can."

Second-half goals from Flint and substitute Greg Cunningham paved the way for City's fourth win in six league games this season. And City's 6ft 5in central defender Flint was delighted to register his first goal in any game at Ashton Gate.

"I think it's about time I scored a goal at Ashton Gate," admitted Flint, who rose high at the back post to head in Luke Freeman's pinpoint corner seven minutes after the break and put City on course for a sixth win in six outings.

"We had a lot of set-pieces and, to be honest, should have done more with them. It was good to score from a corner, but it is an area we can do better in and we know we need to improve.

"I'm a defender first and foremost and that is why I'm happy with the clean sheet.

"But the gaffer is always telling us we need to share the goals around and I'm happy to chip in."

Meanwhile, the Robins have been drawn away to League Two Cheltenham Town – one of manager Steve Cotterill's former clubs – in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Although a date has still to be confirmed, the tie will be staged at Whaddon Road, probably on Tuesday, October 7.

I know its great to clock up the points but what is still worrying is that again our forwards didn't score! a couple unlucky shots and a packed defence shouldn't have stopped us in the first half...get a goal and then they have to play....... or go home broke!

If you look at it another way, it's also positive that there are goals coming from other areas of the team when the strikers don't score.
