Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has vowed to forge 'an exciting squad' ahead of the new Premier League campaign. The Black Cats have sold youngster Jordan Henderson this summer to Liverpool and on Friday the two clubs discovered they would be facing each other on the first day of the season. Sunderland then host arch-rivals Newcastle a week later before visiting newly-promoted Swansea and welcoming Chelsea to the Stadium of Light. Having also sold Darren Bent to Aston Villa in January, manager Steve Bruce has some work to do to have a competitive squad ready for that opening period. But Quinn has promised to back Bruce's efforts to boost his options and rebuild his side. "The journey begins again and it promises to be an interesting one," he told the club's official website. "We have got a tough start to the season, but you have to play everyone twice during the course of the season, so it all evens itself out. Challenges "We are looking to build an exciting squad to meet the challenges to come, and I'm confident we will be able to do that. "There's a real sense of excitement now and I hope the fans will get behind us and back us through the turnstiles " Niall Quinn Quotes of the week "As a club, we are exploring a number of potential signings and have been speaking to a number of players and agents. "There's a real sense of excitement now and I hope the fans will get behind us and back us through the turnstiles. "We are all moving ahead in the same direction and there's plenty to look forward to." Keiren Westwood and Sebastian Larsson are set to arrive on free transfers while Sunderland are also close to completing deals to sign strikers Ji Dong-won and David Ngog. The Black Cats have made a £12million bid to sign Manchester United trio Darron Gibson, Wes Brown and John O'Shea, while Bruce has also registered his interest in Birmingham midfielder Craig Gardner.
I'm sure everyone at the club are lokking for exciting signings but I know right now I am far from excited, I want to be, want nothing more but still waiting for an exciting name to come through the door. We could be looking at Messi, Rooney and Ronaldo but cant say I would get excited about us signing them.

God i hope so. Also hope we get top CF to go with the above
Quiet word to Niall. You've shown you can talk a good fight but more than ever, you need to understand that gates are 100% linked to the teams performances and players you bring in. With the Judas departure and now the Henderson sale, you wont have added one single bum to a single seat thus far. In fact, it could be argued that there will be LESS people willing to pay to watch the likes of N'Gog and Won up front. If you want bigger crowds Niall, can I suggest you dont sell any more of our better players and recruit some better ones again to add to them. That way, the fence sitters may decide to leave the warmth of the bar and come along to games more often. Our home record last season was attrocious and certainly no advert to attract more people to part with hard earned money. The club have to make the product attractive to attract the floating voters. Once they are hooked, it will be easier to recruit them going forward. The after effects of the humiliation of the 15 points season, is still having its effect 6 years on. Lost supporters after that have yet to buy back into the club and fear relegation is still on the cards. Selling Bent and Henderson hasnt relieved those fears, its added to them and the last 2 seasons flirting woth relegation again, isnt selling us too well. Thats why this summers recruitment campaign is crucial for manager and chairman alike.
The problem is exciting doesn't necessarily mean good. For example Dong could be classed as an exciting signing, as he is young, promising, but ultimately unproven. It is the unknown aspect that makes him exciting. Id be more comfortable hearing "World Class", "Top Class", "Proven Premier League" for example than exciting.
Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has promised to help manager Steve Bruce build an exciting squad for the new Barclays Premier League campaign. The fixture list announced this morning will see Bruce's side pitched into battle with Liverpool at Anfield on the opening day of the season, a date which could see former Black Cats midfielder Jordan Henderson make his league debut for the Reds against his home-town club. Sunderland's Premier League fixtures for 2011-2012 They then welcome arch-rivals Newcastle to the Stadium of Light a week later for their first home game with revenge for last season's disappointments firmly in mind. Henderson's departure on top of that of Darren Bent in January has left Bruce with a major rebuilding job to do as he attempts to both replace key players and strengthen the squad they have left behind, and Quinn is confident he will do just that. The Irishman told the club's official website, www.safc.com: "The journey begins again and it promises to be an interesting one. "We have got a tough start to the season, but you have to play everyone twice during the course of the season, so it all evens itself out. "We are looking to build an exciting squad to meet the challenges to come, and I'm confident we will be able to do that. "We are all moving ahead in the same direction and there's plenty to look forward to." Much of the groundwork for deals to sign strikers Ji Dong-won and David Ngog has been completed, while free transfer moves for Keiren Westwood and Sebastian Larsson are at an advanced stage. Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has indicated his willingness to consider a switch to Wearside, although team-mates Wes Brown and John O'Shea seem less enamoured after the Red Devils accepted a joint bid totalling in excess of £12million. Sunderland have also registered their interest in Birmingham midfielder Craig Gardner while Bruce is a long-term admirer of Charles N'Zogbia, although Wigan's valuation, which is understood to top £10million, has not wavereNiall-Quinn-promises-to-back-Steve-Bruce-as-Sunderland-look-to-rebuild-with-Darron-Gibson-Wes-Brown-and-John-O-Shea-in-their-sights-article Although I'm nervous of no new blood in the door yet, its early days and i know it will happen. Quinn would not give his backing if Ellis was feeling reserved about the cash,so i expect a big striker signing to follow.
Actions speak louder than words Niall? Talking about good squads and exciting players are one thing. Bringing them here is another. Why are we pissing about again with our main targets. Surely we have had them in our sights since March or April. Liverpool have identified their targets and KK has only been in th job 5 minutes. Thay have acted swiftly to head off the chasing pack and thats what we should be doing but I get the feeling we are just waiting around to see what scraps fall off the top tables. As each day goes by and the deafening silence from the SOL remains, I get a very uneasy feeling that we are slowly losing out. We cant even get players who want to come here signed. Westwood, Gibson, Won and Vaughan have all been described as "on their way"? What are they travelling up to the NE on? Tortoises? Trying to remain calm but events are not happening and we are half way through June now. Another 2 weeks and my arse will be in full throttle in the nervous stakes.
It is only June guys...the window isn't really officially opened yet, people have been on holiday, decisions are being made. I would rather bide our time and bring in the right people at the right price. It's like a game of poker, you don't go out all guns blazing straight away, you probe a bit, see what you think the competition are going to do, play the media and time it to perfection. I think it is fair to say Bruce has improved our team the past 2 years, there is no reason to think we won't be better off last year - althuogh I do see Bent as the player we will struggle to replace.
Yeh of course. We all know we will be buying 4+ players this summer. I agree I'd like to see at least one marquee signing in the same way we got Bent and Gyan...and there's no reason why we won't.
Not to put too fine a point on this kidda but if we probe for N'Zogbia and Crouch any further we'll be up alongside their ****ing tonsils. By the time we actually sign either of them they will have been retired from the game 10 years. Look at how KK has acted after 5 mins in the Liverpool hotseat. Carroll and Suarez in January. Henderson and 2 or 3 others straight away now. Big money and big targets for a big thinker. We look like timid little lambs in comparison. Boldness wins the day for me and its not as if Bruce has just realised we need new recruits. He has been planning this for 5 months now. Hasnt he?
Just received the Legion Of Light magazine .. Quinn goes onto say; 'We have to realise that the owner has put a lot of money in over the past few years in order to get us a base. We've reached that base and we've got to be smart now. There are a couple of exciting players out there who we're trying to get and when the time is right we'll let people know who they are. ' 'It's a tough time but we know what we want. We can't give things away and fans have to realise that we can't openly say who we're after because it could cost us millions of pounds. We need to operate as cagily as possible. We've also got to look at the loan players one by one and see what will happen to them next year so there's a lot to ponder.' 'We're a stable Barclays Premier League club. This year coming up is our fifth time in a long time that the club have sustained this position. Hopefully our average crowd of 40,000 will stay with us more will add to it as we make the next step.' 'I know talk is cheap but you have your top six now with Spurs and Liverpool joining the Manchester clubs, Chelsea and Arsenal' 'I suppose in people's minds Everton and Villa are in behind that and the question is can we be part of that next year, that's our aim' 'We want to give the crowd something to shout about again. Once again this season they've proved how good they are. They've been right behind us every step of the way and have done all they could to help the team who they knew we're missing key men. We've tested the patience of our support at times and just as they've shown understanding of what we need we want to show an understanding of what our support needs.' 'We will be working as hard as we can to give them that' .... I know it's only words but I'm sure Quinn grasps the importance of the coming months and from what I've read, I think he does.
Yes but look at the money he has spent! £20 on Henderson, £23 on Suarez, £35 on Carroll. When you can pay over the odds, or willing to, then you can be bold. Also Liverpool are still considered a "Big" team in the UK, heritage wise possibly the biggest team still, or alongside United - they can attract these players. The truth is we haven't won anything since 1973 and need to convince these sorts of players why they should come. Selling Bent and Henderson was good financially but I doubt other big players will sign until other big players join...so bit of a chicken and egg situation we have at the moment.
It may be early days, but the players will soon be back in for pre season training, then off to bond playing pre-season friendlies. I'm happy to wait until the end of the window for a marque player, but surely we want the rank and file players in and settled before Sat 13 Aug?
After reading this, I feel totally relaxed about the whole situation. The transfers will happen, we just have to be patient.
I'm sorry but it sounds like talk to sell seats. Like people say, other clubs are signing players now, we are still dallying, and i, for one, am starting to worry about it. Like Cest says, these players have been 'imminent' for weeks, and nee ****er has signed, not even ding dong or whatever his name is, and he's hardly in a ten team ruck for his signature. For the record, relegation battles are 'exciting'. I'm not panicking yet, but i sure am wondering what the **** is happening, or not.
I would like to think we could get most of our 'target's' pretty quick, because if we are in for 8-9 player's then we need them to get some understanding in pre training/season together........it's not looking good. Unless we have a couple virtually complete and just waiting on a few more so the club announce it to the public in one go.
I hate it when Niall bangs on about getting fans through the turnstiles. Surly he realizes we have punched above our weight in the crowd department since the completion of the SOL. Niall you want to fill the SOL? I guarantee if you give us a team that will consistently challenge for top honors with the big boys, we will fill the SOL. Give us a team that can just about live in this league year in year out and you should be very, very grateful to the 40'000 your getting now.
