Bristol used to have quite a few cinemas Gayiety, Rex, Scala, Ritz worked here prior to closure doing the bands on a Sunday Night, ABC, Gaumont, Odeon might have been 2? , Kings, Majesty and others not sure about ??? Embassy? van Dyck?
there used to be a tier system for who gets the cans first and for how long .. I think the Gaumont was first in line in Bristol, places like Gaiety would have been 3rd tier and often failures of the film showed, when you got a sudden jump because it had been spliced. A film reel at the Ritz had about a dozen splices in it and the film was less than 6 months old!
nope there was thousands of cinema's back pre 1980's even Castle Cary where Sat am's was a matinee and showed captain Marvel and the suchlike
6d used to get a bag of chips for that and the scrumps were free always cooked in " quality fat" not oil!
I remember going to the ABC in Bemmy as a kid...I think it was called the "Minors" club on a Saturday morning?...a cartoon or 2, a short film then the main feature film. The breaks in between were a free for all of kids running about, scrapping and just being generally mad!
I also remember school dinners when I was in Victoria Park school.....12 pence!...........or 12 pence would of got me sausage in batter and chips, a drink and money left for sweets!...............wouldn't get the batter now
you pay more than 12p in some places for sauce ! Went on a job to the NE and stopped for fish and chips on the way back, asked for a garlic mayonnaise dip 50p = total £4 not bad a price, and just as I was to pay with it all salt and vinegared and wrapped up in double paper, as I was going to a layby I had spotted on the way up, I asked for 2 tomato sauces the girl said £4.30, WHAT 15p for a sauce, take it or leave it was the result of my "negotiating" I walked out and drove on my merry way 10 miles later another chip shop where I had haddock and chips mayo dip, 3 tomato sauces, free o c and enjoyed the £3.75 meal struggled with chips but finally got them all down when passing Brum even warm 3 hours later they were edible..........
I think, but might be wrong, that School Dinners in Hengrove in around 1971/2 were 2p or maybe 5p. That might just be saying something about the school and/or the quality of the food though !
