Steve Cotterill: 'We need to be more ruthless'

Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill has admitted his side need to be more ruthless in front of goal if they're to stay in the division.

The Robins 2-1 home loss to Coventry City leaves them level on points with the bottom four, having tasted victory just once in six games.

"We put enough balls into their box, enough to win," Cotterill told reporters after the game at Ashton Gate. "They've scored from a bad throw and bad marking at a corner.

"Sam Baldock hit the post, we've had enough balls go right across their box. We've got to be scoring those chances. We've got to be more ruthless.

"I'm not going to use the conditions as an excuse. The frustration is we're having to chase games. We're having to make too many changes. Maybe we have to change things now."

City are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Oldham.

We Deserved A Draw - Cotterill

Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill felt that his side deserved a draw rather than the 2-1 defeat to Coventry City.

Speaking to the Bristol Post, Cotterill replied when asked if his side were worth a draw: “Definitely. I feel we did enough to merit that.

“Had Sam Baldock’s shot gone in, it would have been one of the goals of the season. It would definitely have put us back in the game.

“I thought we pinned them in there in the second half and, overall, I felt we deserved at least a point from the game. We’ve had enough balls that have whizzed across the goal in the second half and we have to be more ruthless in those situations.

“We’ve made a mistake from a throw-in for the first goal and the second one has come from a corner.

“It doesn’t matter how well you play, if you don’t defend from corners and throw-ins, you are going to be in trouble.

"There is a recurring theme with the goals we are conceding this season and it doesn’t matter what formation we play or who is on the pitch. We always seem to have to dig ourselves out of a hole.

“It’s demoralising for the players, because they put in a hard shift and end up with nothing.”

On a second closer read I ask how can he say we need to make changes now when that must have been why he was hired. Excuses never count and saying that they put in a hard shift makes me wonder where he was during the diabolical first half?

I'm already getting bored with hearing the same old rhetoric and excuses week after week, or should I say defeat after defeat

I can now annouce that Cotts Honeymoon Period is at an end. The players by and large dont care and no matter how you shuffle the managers or playing staff we are a club with an uncurable cancer from the very top to the very bottom

I'd like to see Lansdown go and take his puppet son with him.

Only then will we have a chance to reinvent ourselves.

Think we are down quite honestly- Only plus point coming out of it all for me living in Devon is that the games at Exeter, Torquay and Plymouth are closer to home :emoticon-0114-dull:

    More ruthless ?
What you need to do Mr Cotterill is throw the bloody tea set across the room, howl in the faces of your players and scare them into playing like their lives depended on it.

Are the Bristol City players men or boys ?
Its time they decided, and if its boys then SC should be the headmaster and rule by fear.
Otherwise the whole rotten mess will disappear into the abyss

    nb
If its boys then the idiot who signed them should be made to buy out their contracts

Time to kick ass Steve and if you can't do it then maybe we need to look elsewhere. You are all paid well to do a job that you can't play well so how about giving us a rest from statements that insult our support and go out and do the job for which you were hired.

Unfortunately I think we all know the answer to that one, and as Banksy pointed out a couple of weeks back, screaming into players faces when they underperform is fast becoming a thing of the past I'm afraid.
It would be a lot better if we were able to withold their wages. We might see a different attitude then.

The cloud of negativity that has been hanging over the club for the last 3 years is really taking it's toll. It is a sh1tty, sh1tty time to be a City fan. No wonder all the youngsters want to support the Prem Glam Clubs - why be associated with such a tragic failure as BCFC. I am losing faith at a rapid rate over here......

I think we need to motivate the players so they can perform well, thus getting us out of the mess.
