If it's tempo he's after, maybe we should stop looking for a midfielder and sign a decent drummer instead. I think Ringo's available, but he would bump up our average age and might well expect bigger wages than we want to pay.

Yeah, but Lennon always had a nasty streak, so that comment was probably more for Ringo's 'benefit' than a genuine critique. Anyone who tells you Ringo wasn't a great drummer doesn't know drumming. He wasn't the flashiest, but with him it's all about feel and sensitivity, providing precisely what's needed for any given song and burying his ego for the need of the band. We could do with a Ringo in midfield rather than a flamboyant Moon or Bonham (great as they both were).
This could be quite a good game. Rock Stars making up a team. Nick Mason in goal - steady and reliable, nothing flash. Johnny Rotten the annoying centre back snapping away at people's ankles, David Gilmour as a creative midfielder, that sort of thing.
Yes, it's for charity purposes so I won't be too harsh, but I wouldn't want my club affiliated in any way with One Direction!
I remember going to see the 'Charlie Watts Orchestra' play at Fulham Town Hall and yes, I'll resist the temptation of a Kara like pun. Difficult, apart from the orchestra bit in the band's name, when they played numbers like "Stomping at the Savoy" "Scrapple from the Apple" and "Flying Home".
Away from drummers, but on a similar theme, I've seen the imaginatively titled "Mick Taylor Band" a couple of times still a great musician and surrounds himself with talent, but easy to see how his personality might not have fit with the Glimmer Twins.
He's apparently only there to promote the club and raise money for something which I've forgotten. My question is, why do they need a popstar to do this? Surely there are plenty of ex pros who could actually get some gametime and promote the club/raise money at the same time?
To be fair, there aren't a lot of ex-pros with a Doncaster connection who would have got as many headlines as the One Direction lad. If the object of the exercise is profile raising/money raising then it's probably a good move. It may make them a bit of a laughing stock in football circles, but it will get them a lot more attention from people who don't usually look twice at football. And who aren't yet through puberty.
Good point, Tosh. Keegan was the only big name I could think of, and I don't think one qualifies as 'a lot of ex-pros'. His name also reaches a very different demographic to the One Direction feller. If they are looking to court youth, they've gone (sorry, pun alert) in the right direction.
Okay, how about these: Berbatov as Prince: moody and unpredictable yet precociously talented and adored by the critics. Damien Duff as Bryan Adams: no fuss, no ego, but a dependable talent whose best days (sadly - as far as Duffer goes) are behind him. Joey Barton as Johnny Rotten: snarling, angry man with undeniable talent, but also with a tendency to self-destruct and to refuse to play the game to the same rules as everyone else Chris Baird as David Bowie: been around for ages, displaying a remarkable talent for reinventing himself as necessary Luis Suarez as Ozzy Obsourne: Biting things. No further explanation required, surely. Roman Abramovic as Simon Cowell: Moneybags dictator figure plotting world domination. Michael Owen as Gary Barlow: Undeniably talented, but now a bit dull, corporate and safe.
Well, they don't necessarily, but the OD singer is, apparently, a lifelong Doncaster fan and that was the angle that the publicity was following. I guess it was the reason that he was happy to get involved, so any other big name would need some kind of reason to do so. How am I becoming the spokesman for Doncaster's link-up with One Direction? Life sometimes takes us on strange paths.
