Beer must be sold at all venues hosting matches in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, football's world governing body, Fifa, has insisted.

Fifa General Secretary Jerome Valcke said the right to sell beer must be enshrined in a World Cup law the Brazilian Congress is considering.

Alcoholic drinks are currently banned at Brazilian stadiums and the country's health minister has urged Congress to maintain the ban in the new law.

Brewer Budweiser is a big Fifa sponsor.

<laugh> Well done Fifa, at least you get some things right...

I wonder what they're going to do in Qatar?

I wouldn't be surprised if Qatar change the law for the duration of the world cup. FIFA wanted us to scrap our minimum wage law for the duration if London had won, a request the Tories were willing to adopt.

I'm amazed beer is banned at Brazilian stadiums though. Thought they were the party capital of the world?!?

Reading some of the comments on the BBC website it sounds like you can get beer, their stadiums are huge so must be a mission to stop it.

It's surprising they gave them the World Cup without assurances that they could change the law, FIFA would be well pissed off if their sponsors aren't happy...

I can't imagine going to a match sober?

I imagine they'll have to change a few rules for the Qatari WC. Players won't be able to hug and kiss when they score goals because it's a bit homoerotic. No hotdogs either due to the fraction of filthy pig in them. No sexy dancing Brazilian fans, they'll have to cover up. Plus no beer of course. We might as well just cancel the ****ing thing.

There's a whole economy of prostitution, drugs, etc that usually follows World Cups, they won't be welcome in Qatar either...

The Brazilian one should be good though! South American teams are the best to watch usually, and it'll give them an extra advantage. Can't wait! The S. African one was ****e.

2014 should be good. Not too sure about Poland and Ukraine though. The very names just bring to mind concrete jungles and racist skinheads.
