Our wing backs both contributed to goals or creating chances, but they both contributed to us conceding as well, and you cannot blame them for their defensive deficiencies if they're basically wingers playing as make shift wingbacks. I also don't feel right blaming ASM for losing the ball if we're just going to play deep in our own half, and play the ball to him expecting him to be Messi and skin everyone every time. He will lose the ball sometimes and if we're going to play the ball to him in our own half we have no right to complain when that risk doesn't pay off. It was the wingbacks leaving us massively exposed at times. They, in my opinion, are the biggest weak link in our team. We don't have enough confidence on the ball in the middle, and our wingbacks are getting slaughtered at times because they cannot track players properly because they're not defenders.
I think we have enough in there for now. Could be better, but I think the fact that we create chances and look a good threat is evidence that going forward isn't an issue, it's defensive that's always been a massive issue. We often look so vulnerable.
I'll be honest wing backs are more offensive. We play with 3 centre backs and 1 holding midfielder and 1 Shelvey. In all honesty their defensive qualities should be shored up by the above 4/5 players.
Midfield first for me. The key role which hadn’t been filled for years is still a gaping problem, a drop off in quality from sides around us which is scary really. We do need wingbacks/full backs too however. They would be the three I’d target. But yeah holding midfield is a huge issue which is cattling so many aspects of our play.
