We have to wise up quickly, says QPR boss

NEIL WARNOCK says his players have to wise up quickly to life in the Premier League if they are to avoid more hammerings like the one Bolton dished out on the opening day.

The QPR boss was far from downhearted by the 4-0 drubbing at Loftus Road, but did concede his team need to be more street-wise with their defending to avoid being suckered into giving away cheap free-kicks like the one which led to the second goal.

“You do get cuter as you go along and you've got to learn quickly,” Warnock said.

“I do think we've got to be less naïve in certain situations. I think all three teams that come up have to grow up quickly – you've got to be cuter.

“It was disappointing how we capitulated at 2-0 and we've got to learn lessons quickly.Gary Cahill scored a great goal for the first but we defended poorly and got punished, which you do in the Premier League.

"We defended like amateurs as well for the second and once that goes in, it's a poor performance.

“But up to then I was quite pleased. I thought we created some good chances and could have scored one or two goals. I was quite happy at the back and didn't see a threat until the second goal goes in.

Warnock added: “Rather than commit suicide, you've got to look at that and say 'How can I eliminate the errors?'”

We defended like amateurs - well Neil, we all knew defence needed to be strengthened and you brought in sicknote Dyer and accident waiting to happen Gabbidon and couldn't find a place on the bench for Gorkks. Sorry for mouthing off Neil, I am still a big fan and trust you will get it right.

I think Neil has brought in whoever was available to him within his limited restrictions Abu ! Lets be honest lads, we all know we will struggle this season but none of it can be down to warnock.

The true blame lies with the board for not parting with the cash to reinforce the defence with quality signings. However, Dyer was a big risk and Gabbidon doesn't improve on what we have. We needed back up for Orr, no where near good enough for this level. Can't understand thinking behind Gorkks.

I am touched by everyone's faith on Neil. No way do I want him out but he has to take some responsibility for the 'naivity' and organisational shambles that was the 2nd half defence. He has failed at this level before - let's hope he learned and he gets 'cute' quickly.

Fair comment. I suppose he has his blind spots about players like all managers. He doesn't seem to rate Gorrks and, whilst I don't think he's much better than any we have, I think he is better than Hall or Connolly. Neil is un-proven at this level too and, while I realise how much his hands are tied, I think it's reaonable to question some of his decisions etc.

The team actually played better defensively in the first 15 minutes of the second half and were closing down the opposition quicker than they had in the first half. Once Ali got conned for the free kick by Davies that led to the 2nd goal we just fell apart, so I think it's clear Warnock got the message across but the players showed a certain lack of fight/pride once we were two down.

The main point is the board have let Warnock and the fans down badly by not spending in the key areas that need strengthening.

I honestly don't think gorkks would have made a great deal of difference if any at all! Im sure warnock would love to get new full backs like he supposedly tried to, but when your budget allows for only 1.2 million then the sort available will most likely be no better than what we already have.

We need to trawl through the loan market post haste for a replacement for Orr

This result made my day, not quite as much as the Palace result, but almost!!

Hill up to his old tricks as usual and Derry will soon have no place in the midfield in the Prem, so he will be coming home to Selhurst.

Enjoy it while it last's ladies and gents.
