http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...well-hopes-to-team-up-with-striker-again.html Not sure what to think.
Yeah, I heard Jewell saying that the kids got us nowhere last season so he needs to sign lots of experienced players
Heskey? Really? Wow, that is really dire. Can't believe you lot are in for him. I'm a little dumbstuck really.
Depends what the terms are really, we all agree that we need a big man to go with chops and while Heskey doesn't score that many, over the last few years there has not been many better than him playing the target man role. yes he is past his best, but i'm sure he could do a job for us! Like i have said, it all depends on the deal offered.
i thought i'd read he'd gone to hull about a month ago, so was a bit shocked when i read that this morning!
Dont know what to make of this at all really. Then again I've not really known what to make of Heskey for the past decade!
Yeah, I second your thoughts Hampy. A bit of head scratching from the Blue faithful this morning. Like any player who signs he'll get our full support if he tries his best... if it's true
Heskey is one of those players that any opposition will give stick to, but he does a lot of hard graft and normally his strike partner gets the credit for scoring yet it was something that heskey done to make that chance. yes he isn't going to beat anybody in a sprint, but thats not his job, yes he isn't going to score more than 10 goals in a season, but that really isn't his job either. his job is to hold the ball up, give the attack a focal point to play the ball into, and then bring others into the attack to score the goals. One thing that worries me is that desire might not be there anymore, thats the only thing.
I can't wait till JWM hears this! This is one that will split fans, I just keep think back to what an impact Jason Roberts had for Reading last season and i just think that heskey could be the perfect foil for chops.
naturally, after yesterday, you'll assume this is a wind up of some kind but bloody hell, i'm sure my fellow norwich fans will back me up on this! when heskey came to norwich last season with villa, i've never laughed so hard at an opposing players 'performance'. i was shocked at how bad he was. he got so much grief from his own fans and we all started joining in with a chorus of 'on the pitch if heskey scores'. he was totally and utterly hopeless, completely useless. in his day he was a real handful - i've never really liked him as a player but he was effective in a 'holding up the ball for others' way. at the villa game, the ball would just bounce off him and any talent the lad had he has lost but at least he does have the disclaimer that alex mcleish was his manager, so maybe it was all down to him, just as all of villa's issues were down to him
To be honest, I feel slightly underwhelmed, however, I've hardly seen him play a full match over the last year or so, so I can't really comment on how good a player he is. However, surely wages will be an issue?
We certainly shouldn't break the bank for him, and on a one year deal with the option for a following year based on appearances should be fine. Supers, i didn't expect anything else from you. but if we are in the market for a big man up front, who can hold the ball up and play in others then Heskey is your man. I bet if you ask any defenders in your capacity of being chief scount in english football they will tell you that he is a handful. Like i have said, Heskey isn't there to score more than 10 goals in the season, he is there to make chances for others!
i think he'd do ok in the championship to be fair, but he has lost his touch and he makes jason scotland look mobile. in his past three years at villa he has scored 5 league goals and has 4 assists. what he does is create space for a fellow striker - it might work with chopra, but i wouldn't bet on it. would be interesting to see though so i hope you get him!
Villa were dire last season and Heskey had little reason to be motivated so his performance against your lot isn't a worry. Short term fixes is just not the direction we should be going in and if we sign him then it means we've learned very little. That said, we do have a shortage of forward options and there is certainly a buzz around the place so perhaps it'll be a good move.
I don't think there's a major problem with having the odd short-term fix in our squad - most clubs have them. The issue last season was that most of our first team was made up of short-term fixes! So far this summer, we've bought 3 players aged 25 or under who have the potential to improve and be with us for a long time to come, so I don't have any quarrel with bringing in a thirtysomething on a short term deal to address a specific area the manager wants to improve. Whether Heskey would be the right man for the job, I'm less sure, as he really hasn't done a lot (or even played a lot) at Villa, but I'm prepared to give him a chance. He might find that life in the Championship suits him better and, let's face it, if he can rediscover a bit of form then he could be a right handful at this level.
