I am now towards they end of my second week of uni and with societies and sporting clubs going into full swing this week one or two societies/clubs received rather pleasant surprises.

The fencing club has received huge funding from the government as part of the post-olympic drive to encourage people participating in sport. The money has allowed the club to buy more equipment and pay for a coach to train us weekly with the hope that we will be able to compete in national competitions very shortly. This also means that the club capacity has increased as we have more swords and protective gear to hand out. This is a great achievement given that the club was only set up last February. I joined having never done fencing before and I ended up coming second at our end-of-year inter-uni competition having beaten some fairly experienced fencers on the way.

At our fresher's fair we found that a lot of people wanted to join because of the fencing they saw at the olympics and thought it looked like fun. We set up taster sessions for those who were beginners and there was such a high demand that we're still struggling to fit people in. Also, the early response to the taster sessions is they love it. So we are having to set up four sessions a week, where previously it was just one for those who have expressed further interest after trying the taster session.

This is proof that bringing the olympics to London and what Lord Coe set out to do is working.

Unfortunately we have had a bit of a drawback though in that our SU has decided to take at least 2/3rds of the funding made available to the club as it is heavily in debt. Hopefully we can claim that money back as it has been incorrectly used by the SU. But we are still lucky that the club received the highest amount out of all societies and clubs for this year!

Hope this helps to prove that the Olympic legacy is in place.

1950, I remember you saying over the summer that the Olympic legacy will die down rather quickly. It's all alive and well at my uni!

If it wasn't for the Olympics our uni sports clubs wouldn't be thriving as well as they are now.

Just like Norfolk's roads are full of Bradley Higgins wannabes just now - let's see how many last the winter!

Fortunately it has disappeared off the roads around here. All the overweight buggars wobbling about on their bikes round the bends of our country roads holding us motorists up seem to have gone back to being motorists themselves. However the little cracker who runs past the front of our village pub at 7 o'clock every night is still keeping our spirits up!!!

Personally I think Jimmy Savile has provided us with a wonderful week's entertainment at no cost whatsoever.

What have Arthur Scargill, Maggie Thatcher and Jimmy Saville got in common?

They all spent the 80's shafting miners.
